Your baby's mouthing is not only a healthy form of discovery, it's also a sign of advancing physical and cognitive development. Grasping and bringing an object to their mouth requires your baby to coordinate their vision and motor skills.
By the time she's two years old, your child will use her fingers to explore most of the time. And by the age of three years, most children have stopped putting objects into their mouths.
That's because oral exploration is a key developmental stage. Putting toys and other household objects in their mouth allows babies to discover the taste and texture of different objects. Mouthing objects can also be a sign that the first tooth is ready to surface.
For babies, chewing is a typical sign they're teething and young children (until around age 2) use their mouths to explore the world. But even some older kids develop a habit of chewing. This isn't chewing a favorite food or little snack, but rather inedible objects (clothing, pens, toys) that comfort them.

Oftentimes when there are sensory needs in the mouth, there are sensory needs outside of the mouth, too. When you meet those needs outside of the mouth (when the body gets the right amount of proprioceptive input), the need to chew often decreases.
Many kids with autism exhibit Pica behavior, which means they mouth, chew on, or ingest things that aren't edible. This can be extremely dangerous as kids often eat or mouth things that are either unsanitary, unhealthy in some way or even objects that are sharp that could potentially lead to internal injuries.
At 6 months old, babies will rock back and forth on hands and knees. This is a building block to crawling. As the child rocks, he may start to crawl backward before moving forward. By 9 months old, babies typically creep and crawl.
These children are often described as “picky eaters” and may have an extremely limited diet, restricting themselves to only a few familiar foods. Children with oral sensory processing issues may also refuse to use utensils to eat, disliking the feeling of a spoon or fork in their mouths.
Bring Hand to Mouth
Even if it seems like your baby is slapping themself, let them try bringing their fingers to their mouth. This is an important 2 month baby milestone. They will eventually reach their destination, and they'll be able to suck on their thumb whenever they please.
