As women age, their milk systems shrink and are replaced by fat. By menopause, most women's breasts are completely soft. This can make normal lumps more noticeable. Sometimes women find their breasts feel different when they lose or gain weight and sometimes breasts change for no obvious reason.
Female breasts emerge during puberty, grow through adolescence, and reach full maturity by early adulthood. While mature breasts may be done developing, they're certainly not finished changing — women experience a variety of natural breast changes as time goes on.
With age, a woman's breasts lose fat, tissue, and mammary glands. Many of these changes are due to the decrease in the body's production of estrogen that occurs at menopause. Without estrogen, the gland tissue shrinks, making the breasts smaller and less full.
This is due to fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone. Other women may experience changes in breast size and shape during this time, which usually begins when a woman is in her forties, typically around age 45.
Most often, skin changes that you notice in you breasts are due to benign, non-cancerous conditions. It is important, however, to see your doctor if you notice any abnormalities, particularly if they do not resolve within a few days, as skin changes can be particularly prominent in some types of breast cancer.
Changes in Breast Size or Shape
Your breasts may change during different points in your life. For instance, this can happen when you have your period and when you're pregnant, often enlarging due to hormones. Once you reach menopause, you may feel like your chest sags, becoming smaller and losing its shape.
Possible breast changes that may occur as a result of aging include: stretch marks or wrinkles appearing on the breast skin. the breasts looking elongated, stretched, or flattened.
As you reach the age of 40 years and approach perimenopause, hormonal changes will cause changes to your breasts. Besides noting changes in your breasts' size, shape, and elasticity, you might also notice more bumps and lumps. Aging comes with an increased risk of breast cancer.
Check with your doctor or nurse if you notice unusual changes in your breast(s). Lump or firm feeling (also called a mass), including a lump in or near your breast, a lump under your arm, thick or firm tissue in or near your breast or under your arm, or a change in the size or shape of your breast.
How Low Estrogen Can Change Your Breasts. Low estrogen levels can decrease the amount of fat and tissue in your breasts, leaving them smaller and less full than they used to be. Additionally, mammary gland tissue typically shrinks during menopause, which also may leave your breasts looking different.
It's normal that hormone changes make your breast tissue less glandular and more fatty as you get older.
There's no specific age when your breasts will start to sag. It's common for some droop in your 40s and beyond, but many women experience saggy breasts earlier. If you're lucky enough to escape the droop in your 30s and 40s, you'll most likely notice changes in elasticity and fullness as menopause approaches.
The breasts can enlarge after menopause due to the hormone oestrogen levels going down. When the breasts go through an " involution " process, the milk glands shut down, and the tissue is replaced with fat.
It is quite common for breast size to be unequal during puberty. If they are different sizes near the end of puberty, they are likely to stay unequal. There is no medical need for treatment for unequal breast size. Unequal breasts won't affect breastfeeding or increase breast cancer risk.
In general, breasts will typically revert to their baseline volume when a mother reaches her pre-pregnancy weight. In many cases, however, breasts may change shape or size and look different for the long-term.
It can happen during puberty, pregnancy or from taking medication. In some cases, it occurs spontaneously and for no reason. Gigantomastia is also referred to as macromastia. However, macromastia is usually defined as excess breast tissue that weighs less than 5 pounds.
The skin on your breasts should naturally be more or less flat and smooth. Again, consistency is key. Bumps and birthmarks that are always present are not a problem. A sudden change in the skin on your breasts should be reported to a doctor.
Breast changes to look out for
a change in the size, outline or shape of your breast. a change in the look or feel of the skin on your breast, such as puckering or dimpling, a rash or redness. a new lump, swelling, thickening or bumpy area in one breast or armpit that was not there before.
It appears as a red, scaly rash on the skin of the nipple and areola. The affected skin is often sore and inflamed, and it can be itchy or cause a burning sensation. The nipple can sometimes be ulcerated. The rash is often similar in appearance to other skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis.
As oestrogen goes AWOL, breasts go through a process called 'involution' where milk glands shut down and this tissue is replaced by fat. Weight gain also causes an accumulation of fat cells, and some of these camps out in your bra.
You may also notice that your breasts are a different size or shape than they were when you were younger. Changes to your breasts are a normal part of aging. Changes in firmness or size are very common, especially after menopause.
"If you don't wear a bra, your breasts will sag," says Dr. Ross. "If there's a lack of proper, long-term support, breast tissue will stretch and become saggy, regardless of breast size." Still, both experts agree that multiple factors play into if and when sagging (technical term: "ptosis") occurs, bra-wearing aside.
Estrogen keeps the connective tissue of your breasts hydrated and elastic. In the hormone's absence, the breasts shrink because the ducts and mammary glands shrink, and the breasts become less firm and lose their shape. You may notice a sagging of the breasts in older women.
Can Sagging Breasts Be Firm Again? Sagging breast tissue cannot regain its youthful firmness without plastic surgery. Unfortunately, measures such as exercising your chest muscles, eating healthy, and applying topical creams are not enough to correct pronounced sagging and drooping.
