Dreams can be so realistic that it can be hard to tell if we're awake or asleep. And sometimes, we wake up in the middle of a dream and wonder if it's possible to go back to sleep and pick up where we left off. It is possible to resume a dream, but it requires a certain focus and concentration.
Have you ever woken up only to find that you are still dreaming? This is a common sleep event known as false awakening. While false awakenings often occur for no reason, there are certain conditions that may cause them, including sleep disorders that disrupt REM sleep.
Of course dreams end. However, that ending may not fit our aesthetic sense of a “proper” ending for a story. Dreams are not narratives. They are imagined experience.
If you remember your dream, it could be that you simply woke up during it, so it's fresh in your mind, says Deborah Givan, MD, sleep specialist at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Or remembering could mean that you're remembering the very last dream you had rather than the dream in full.
During non-REM sleep, the thalamus is inactive, but during REM sleep, when we are dreaming, the thalamus is active, sending the cerebral cortex images, sounds, and sensations, which is why we are able to hear, feel, and see in our dreams similarly to how we do when we are awake.
While researchers still aren't sure what exactly causes dreaming, it's a relief to know that remembering your dreams is a common, healthy thing. It doesn't mean you aren't sleeping well, and it definitely doesn't mean you're crazy or “not normal.”

Although their visual dream content is reduced, other senses are enhanced in dreams of the blind. A dreaming blind person experiences more sensations of sound, touch, taste, and smell than sighted people do. Blind people are also more likely to have certain types of dreams than sighted people.
Dreaming sleep is characterized by rapid eye movements known as REM. The longest recorded period of REM is one of 3 hrs 8 mins by David Powell (USA) at the Puget Sound Sleep Disorder Center, Seattle, Washington, USA on 29 April 1994.
Hypnagogia is the transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep. It's the opposite of hypnopompia, which is the transitional state that occurs before you wake up. During hypnagogia, it's common to experience involuntary and imagined experiences. These are referred to as hypnagogic hallucinations.
Shared dreams definition
Shared dreaming is the idea that two or more people can share the same dream environment. The degree to which the dream is shared can vary, from simply having common elements or events that happen in each person's dream, to the entire dream being identical.
Between 60% and 75% of American adults experience recurring dreams , with more women experiencing them than men. Although recurring dreams are a normal part of sleep for most people, they can be distressing due to their content.
In fact, a number of people are able to experience something called lucid dreaming, and some of them are even able to control certain elements of their nightly dreams.
Most recurring dreams are assumed to reveal the presence of unresolved conflict or stress in the dreamer's life. Recurrent dreams are often accompanied by negative dream content, that is associated with lower psychological well-being.
According to Backe, bad dreams put your body into a heightened physical state, whether you're awake to realize it or not. "Fever and intense sweating manifest as a result of the often stressful feelings and experiences associated with nightmares," Backe said.
Deaf / hard of hearing people and their dreams
In a study titled Waking and Sleeping, researchers investigated people's dreams with hearing loss. After their research, they concluded that people with hearing impairments hear sounds in their dreams.
Seeing the different sources of light, called light perception, is another form of blindness, alongside tunnel vision and many more. Though, one point to consider is the fact that individuals who were born blind cannot tell whether they see total black or not because, simply, they can't really tell.
Overall, researchers and study participants agreed that black and white dreams were the norm, and rare cases of coloured dreams were dubbed 'Technicolor' dreams (Calef, 1954, Hall, 1951), highlighting their perceived artificiality. This tendency to report black and white dreams suddenly disappeared in the 1960's.
Vallat and a research team found that people who frequently remember dreams have more white matter in a region of the brain known as the medial prefrontal cortex, which is a brain region linked with processing information about oneself.
Why Do Dreams Seem to Last So Long? Study authors have proposed several theories to explain why dreams often seem longer than they really are. One theory is that brain activity might be slower in REM sleep compared with waking life because the brain is at a lower temperature.
“Activation-synthesis hypothesis suggests dreams are caused by brainstem activation during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and stimulation of the limbic system (emotional motor system),” she says.
Belicki (3) found in the laboratory that wakening people up in the REM sleep phase reveals that about 80% of them remember dreams, but in clinical practice young adults remember dreams upon awakening once or twice a week.
A very small percentage of Americans — just one in 10 — say they always remember their dreams, while an equally small percentage say they never remember them. For most Americans, it's somewhere in between. Women are more likely to report remembering their dreams than men, but there is a larger difference by age.
"Dreams are often about identity, because we're figuring out who we are and what we need, and the beliefs and perspectives we hold," says Wallace. "If you feel unfulfilled, undervalued or not the person you want to be in waking life, your dreams will often reflect that.
