Hospital gowns with an open back are designed to allow medical staff easy access to whichever part of the patient is required.
In the majority of cases, you will be asked to remove all other clothing and just leave your underwear on underneath the gown. Interweave provides the Dignity hospital gown to many hospitals, as this provides the patient with more dignity.
Most patients put this side in the back because having it in the front makes them feel more exposed, but in some cases, the doctor will have you put it on with the gap in the front for easier access.
You will most likely be required to remove all undergarments. We understand this can be confronting and uncomfortable for some people, however it is required for surgery, assists in an emergency and ensures your personal garments aren't unnecessarily cut or stained.
Answer: No tampon during surgery
The risk of an infection called Staphylcoccal Shock Syndrome is always there. It is better to use a pad and change as necessary.
Don't worry – It's okay if you have your period the day of your surgery or while you are in the hospital! This will not cause your surgery to be cancelled. Most likely you won't be allowed to wear a tampon while in surgery. Instead, you will be given a pad to wear.
Slide your arms through the sleeves of the gown.
Your gown may have short or long sleeves depending on the hospital you're at. Pull your arms all the way through so that the gown is now hanging off your shoulders with the opening in the back. Most hospital gowns hit just below your knees.
Wear underwear under your gown unless you are being prepped for surgery or a procedure, such as colonoscopy.. But after surgery or your procedure you can wear underwear unless told otherwise. Our hospitals provide what they want you to wear, which may vary depending on what treatment you need.
Gown: Your hospital will give you a hospital gown to change into when you are admitted, but you are also welcome to bring your own. This one is really all about personal preference, but remember whatever you are wearing is going to get messy and probably won't be coming back home with you!

Drinking 500 mL (2 cups) of clear apple juice or cranberry cocktail 3 hours before your Surgery Time is called carbohydrate loading (carb loading). The room is prepared by the OR staff. All instruments are opened and arranged, the surgical table requested is brought into the room, all equipment is checked to be in good working order, and all emergency supplies are verified. Even if it's an outpatient or same-day surgery, compression socks are often prescribed. When you have to be off your feet for a period of time – and particularly for surgeries on the hip, knee, legs or abdomen – there's an increase in your risk for DVT.
Your nurse will work with you to make you as comfortable as possible. You may wake up with a dressing, an IV, oxygen, or other monitors and tubes. The front of the gown is always considered to be contaminated, as are ties at the front. Ties that are at the side and the back are considered to be uncontaminated (Kozier et al, 2018). Isolation gowns are considered task-specific and are worn only when providing client care.
Why can't I wear deodorant to surgery? Deodorants can have alcohol in them. We use a diathermy machine which can make a little spark, and we really don't want to have an explosion because there's alcohol in your armpit.
While you can safely go under anaesthesia while on your period, you may experience side effects as you recover. It's normal for your body to swell while it heals (and constipation from anaesthesia is also normal).
On the day of surgery, you may be asked to arrive several hours before your procedure is scheduled to begin. This allows the staff to complete any tests that cannot be performed until the day of surgery.
Small pieces of sticking tape are commonly used to keep the eyelids fully closed during the anaesthetic. This has been shown to reduce the chance of a corneal abrasion occurring. 1,2 However, bruising of the eyelid can occur when the tape is removed, especially if you have thin skin and bruise easily.
If you wish to wear your underwear, tell the nurse. It must be cotton. You will be asked to empty your bladder and bowels and may be given medicine to help with the latter at your pre assessment appointment. This needs to be taken the evening before your surgery, or you may be given suppositories or an enema.
If you're having general anesthesia, an anesthesiologist will give you medications that make you lose consciousness. After the surgery is complete, he or she will reverse the medication so that you regain consciousness — but you won't be wide awake right away.
Usually, before having a general anaesthetic, you will not be allowed anything to eat or drink. This is because when the anaesthetic is used, your body's reflexes are temporarily stopped. If your stomach has food and drink in it, there's a risk of vomiting or bringing up food into your throat.
