Antibiotics can have side effects such as diarrhoea and feeling sick. These side effects are usually mild and should pass once you finish your course of treatment. If you get any additional side effects, contact your GP or the doctor in charge of your care for advice.
If you take an antibiotic when you don't need it – for example, when you have a cold or the flu – it can make you feel worse and make your illness last longer. In fact, when used the wrong way, antibiotics can cause more severe illnesses like diarrhea, nausea and rashes.
The overall effect is that you may feel tired and generally unwell for some time even though the antibiotics have begun to work and the infection is resolving.

High acid foods – Citrus fruits and juices like orange and grapefruit, soda, chocolate and tomato products have a high acid content, which could decrease how much medicine is absorbed into your system for certain antibiotics.
Common side effects of antibiotics can include rash, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, or yeast infections. More serious side effects include Clostridioides difficile infection (also called C. difficile or C. diff), which causes diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage and death.
Most commonly prescribed antibiotics should not cause fatigue or drowsiness in most people who take them. If you do feel more tired, fatigued or lethargic, it could just be a side effect of being sick. Your body is working hard to fight off a bacterial infection and needs rest to do its job effectively.
Taking antibiotics too often or for the wrong reasons can change bacteria so much that antibiotics don't work against them. This is called bacterial resistance or antibiotic resistance. Some bacteria are now resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics available. Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem.
How long do bacterial infections last? If you're prescribed antibiotics for a bacterial infection, you'll usually have to take them for a week or two, though you'll probably feel better sooner.
The virus life cycle can be divided into three stages—entry, genome replication, and exit (Fig. 3.1 ).
Your healthcare provider may take a sample of your infected tissue and send it to a lab. There, the type of infection can be figured out. Tests can also show which antibiotics will kill the germs. You may have an antibiotic-resistant infection if you don't get better after treatment with standard antibiotics.
One of the more common side effects of antibiotics is nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. As mentioned above, antibiotics sometimes kill the good bacteria in the body along with the bad, leading to stomach issues and possibly dehydration. So in this case antibiotics can make you feel sick and tired.
A duration of 5–7 days of antibiotics is recommended in adults. This is supported by a systematic review showing no significant difference in outcomes between 3–7 days of antibiotics compared to 7 days or longer. 16 For children with non-severe pneumonia there is no difference between 3 versus 5 days of antibiotics.
These antibiotics are broken down by the same pathway in the body as caffeine. Taking these antibiotics together with caffeine may increase the side effects of both. You might experience jitteriness, headaches, increased heart rate and other side effects.
It's recommended that dairy products such as cheese, milk, butter, and yogurt should not be consumed until 3 hours after a dose of antibiotics is taken. Likewise, juices or supplements containing calcium may also reduce effectiveness.
Taking Probiotics and Antibiotics Together is Beneficial
Probiotics make antibiotics more effective at clearing an infection, but they can also significantly reduce the incidence of undesirable side effects of antibiotics, most commonly diarrhea and gut dysbiosis.
Vancomycin, long considered a "drug of last resort," kills by preventing bacteria from building cell walls. It binds to wall-building protein fragments called peptides, in particular those that end with two copies of the amino acid D-alanine (D-ala).
