Dobrik reveals the chain's signature McFlurry dessert cups are designed to fit securely on top of a standard drink cup, allowing customers to "lock" the two items together. The design feature makes it easier to transport both items at once.
Rather than being a straw, the opening at the top of the spoon is actually meant for mixing. After the ice cream and topping is in the cup, workers insert the spoon in the cup and the utensil hooks into a machine that mixes the McFlurry together.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society campaigned for the change, and in 2006 McDonald's made the opening smaller, in order to make it too tiny for hedgehogs to get their heads trapped inside.
The name comes from the process in which the spoon is attached to the McFlurry® mixer which is used to 'flurry' the ice cream and inclusions (and sauce if applicable) together, before being given to the customer.
The ice cream in a McFlurry is the same that McDonald's uses for its cones and sundaes. The ice cream is made from Ultra-high-temperature processing (UHT) milk, extended with methylcellulose.
After dispensing the ice cream and adding toppings like Oreo crumbles or mini M&Ms, McDonald's workers are supposed to blend the concoction together. They do this by inserting part of the McFlurry machine into the hollow straw and turning it on.
So why exactly would the spoon be hollow if not to be used as a straw? The hollowness of the spoon is actually used in the process of blending the McFlurry. The spoon is designed to fit snugly into the machine that blends in the toppings.
The McDonald's McFlurry with M&M'S® is a sweet combination of creamy vanilla soft serve with crunchy M&M'S® chocolate candies swirled in.
It is just ice cream, a touch of milk, and add-ins. But don't let the simplicity of the McFlurry fool you; it's seriously delicious. McDonald's sells many different McFluries: a McFlury with M&M candies and a McFlury with Oreo cookies are the most popular flavors.
“The new process, which is still used now, is to pour the soft serve, sprinkle the topping and then stir three times to mix. The original spoon was used for a period, but as there was no machine, it was not required and was constructed from much more plastics than necessary.
Over the years, McDonald's employees have often said the reason is that the chain's ice cream machines take a really long time to clean, taking up to four hours to sanitize—and it has to be done every single day. When the machines are in the process of being cleaned, they can't serve ice cream.
You can even mix and match different McFlurry flavours
And all you need to do is ask. The very easy trick for extra toppings has gone viral on social media among McDonald's super fans.
It turns out they're not for drinking at all. A supposed McDonald's employee posted a video on social media showing exactly what the spoons – that certainly look like straws as well – are really for, and the internet is blown away.
"The McFlurry spoon was invented by an employee at one of McDonald's suppliers, Flurry International, in 1995," McDonald's explains. "Since then, the McFlurry spoon design has been an iconic part of the dessert's experience!"
Now, McDonald's has outdone themselves with the newest doughnut ball Mcflurry! Made with creamy vanilla soft serve, this McFlurry is topped with hot fudge sauce and Oreo cookie crumbles—and no, we're not talking about the Oreo fudge McFlurry. The kicker? There are four cinnamon doughnut balls on top of the ice cream.

The science behind soft serve
Overall, the main difference between soft serve and ice cream is the texture and fat content. Soft serve is lighter and creamier, with a lower fat content, while ice cream is richer and denser, with a higher fat content. The reason behind this is how the two are made, stored, and served.
Its all about the milk and sugar
According to the site, the soft texture of the ice cream is half the solution, created from a "special combination of ingredients" including "powdered milk, sugar, cream, glucose and emulsifiers."
The regular size is the largest, with about 415 calories and 13g of fat, and a total of 54g of sugar. The snack size is slightly smaller, with about 269 calories, 10g of fat and 33g of sugar. The junior size is the smallest and contains 199 calories, 7g of fat and 24g of sugar.
We're pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it's great to be switching our famous McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material.”
