For more than 100 years the Royal Navy's submariners have worn iconic white woolly jumpers to keep them warm at sea. But their use on shore is banned by the top brass for fear that they are too scruffy, and submariners are ordered to wear the standard navy uniform.
Dolphins, attendants to the Poseidon, Greek god of the sea and patron deity to sailors, is sometimes referred to as the sailor's friend. They were also chosen to represent the Submarine Service because of the characteristic way in which dolphins dive and surface.

The showers on a submarine are set up much like the ones in your home, well kind of. They have hot and cold water access with a recirculation pump so that the water stays hot so that you can use it quickly and efficiently by minimising water usage. Anti-flash hoods are worn by navy personnel whenever a fire breaks out onboard ship, during periods of heightened readiness, or in training exercises. They are usually worn with anti-flash gloves or gauntlets to protect hands and arms.
Submariners are sometimes referred to by the rest of the Navy as 'boat people. ' The submariners refer to the surface fleet as 'skimmers' or less kindly as 'targets.
The blue uniforms are being phased out partly because of sailors' complaints, former Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said in an August statement. “(Sailors) want uniforms that are comfortable, lightweight, breathable … and they want fewer of them,” he said.
The three lines are by tradition said to commemorate the Battles of Copenhagen, the Nile and Trafalgar.

The noise and heat on the enclosed gun decks during battle was horrendous. To try to protect their hearing, sailors often stuffed rags into their ears and then tied a scarf over them and around their forehead, which also helped to keep the sweat out of their eyes.

Section 301c Submarine Duty Incentive Pay (SUBPAY)
Additional pay to increase Navy's ability to attract and retain volunteers for submarine duty, and to compensate for the more than normally arduous character of such duty. The Secretary of the Navy may set SUBPAY rates within a statutory cap of $1,000 per month.
Any serious accident or incident a Veteran encounters while aboard a Navy ship could lead to post traumatic stress disorder if it is severe enough. Although it is somewhat uncommon, Veterans on a Navy ship could develop PTSD while in service.

With more than 65 different places to sleep, you get to choose your own adventure on USS Cobia. USS Cobia is the best-preserved submarine in the country. It has been meticulously restored with amenities added like heating and air conditioning, making it perfect for year-round overnight visits.
Washing and showering was not permitted, and no change of clothes. In such a confined space, with little hygiene, deodorant was used to control body odour. There was no privacy, and all space was filled – crew members even slept in the loading torpedo room.
Sleeping space is in particularly short supply. In fact, Virginia-class submarines like the Missouri have fewer beds than sailors -- about 94 for the 135 crew. That requires what the crews not so affectionately call "hot-racking," where sailors share bunks and sleep in shifts.
So a submariner may work for six hours and train, maintain equipment or sleep for 12 hours. Bunks are generally stacked three high. Space is at a premium in a submarine, and little of it is afforded to each sailor.
To prepare, female officers first went through specialized training to be fully ready for life onboard a submarine. The first female officers reported to Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines in 2011, just one year after the ban on females on submarines lifted.
