A rather grim fate awaits
Now, it appears Father Gabriel's eyes have reacted to the walker blood by going completely blind.
Gabrielle usually keeps one eye covered due to a condition called ptosis. Ptosis is a condition where the eyelid may droop or fall. The eyeball itself isn't affected, but it might cause minor visual impairments.
This unfortunate development hindered Father Gabriel's every move, making simple actions beyond difficult. Father Gabriel can be seen several times in the season 9 trailer appearing to have one blinded eye as evidenced by the pale color while his other eye has remained the same.

Both the show and the comics depict him gradually overcoming his cowardice. That being said, it is the changes the show makes to his arc that improve Gabriel's character from The Walking Dead comics. For that reason, his survival would keep those improvements from going to waste.
It seemed like Gabriel may have suffered a walker bite or scratch and caught fever, but that wasn't it. If you were paying close attention to season eight's seventh episode, Eugene hinted Gabriel was sick because he covered himself in walker guts to escape the Sanctuary trailer with Negan.
Though Gabriel is recovering from his illness, he is still mostly blind and is forced to wear a mask to prevent others from getting sick.
In another stroke of luck, Carson and Gabriel stumble upon a batch of antibiotics that will help cure Gabriel's illness, which it does, but Gabriel's eyesight is permanently ruined. To make the situation even worse, the Saviors recapture Gabriel and Carson, where a desperate move by Carson costs him his life.

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where doctors declared him brain dead. He passed away two days later on May 24, 2013, at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He died at the age of eight years old, and the official autopsy declared he died of blunt force trauma that coincided with neglect and malnutrition.
At another point in the Bible, in the first chapter of Luke's Gospel (Lk 1:11f.), the angel Gabriel brings good news to the Elder Zechariah in the Temple of Jerusalem. He announces the birth of a son, John the Baptist.
Gabrielle covers her eye because of the condition ptosis, sometimes referred to as a “lazy eye”. At the height of her fame, she wore an eye patch for a year – which she has described as her “comfort blanket” – a look which fans still widely associate her with.
Gabriel's story in The Walking Dead season 11 part 3 fixes his biggest mistake, which dates all the way back to his first appearance on the show. Gabriel's season 11 arc is fixing his mistakes from his original Walking Dead story.
Gilliam's Father Gabriel will have yet another breakout episode on Sunday night as the illness plays out, before his actor Seth Gilliam joins Comicbook.com's After the Dead for an exclusive interview to recap. In The Walking Dead comics, Father Gabriel does not ever lose his vision.
