During the course of their disease, approximately 95% of lupus patients will have joint symptoms − either arthritis or arthralgias. Arthritis in lupus is due to inflammation of the lining of the joint (called synovitis) that leads to swelling, tenderness, and stiffness.
Lupus symptoms include: Muscle and joint pain. You may experience pain and stiffness, with or without swelling. This affects most people with lupus.

Hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial medication, is typically prescribed for all patients with lupus at the time of diagnosis and is particularly effective in improving joint symptoms.
Muscle stiffness often arises after changing exercise routines, overusing muscles, or being physically inactive for long periods of time. Otherwise, muscle stiffness can be caused by an underlying condition, including myopathy, neuromuscular disorders, and neurologic disorders.
Lupus may get worse very quickly. There is no way to tell when a flare will happen or how bad it will be. When you have a lupus flare, you may have new symptoms as well as symptoms you have had in the past. Learn your body's signs of a flare, such as joint pain, a rash, a fever, or being more tired.
A number of factors can contribute to your feeling tired on a daily basis. Factors that are related to lupus include anemia, fever, and lung and heart disease. Decreased exercise capacity from reduced blood flow or inflammation in the muscles can also cause fatigue.
Life with lupus can be challenging. With symptoms that come and go, disease flares and remissions, and the uncertainty of what each day will bring, it's normal to experience feelings of unhappiness, frustration, anger, or sadness. It's also normal to grieve for the loss of the life you had before lupus.
Disease activity from lupus itself especially during flare ups can cause fatigue. Other problems that can be caused by lupus, such as anemia may also be a factor in fatigue. However, fatigue is not always related to lupus and it is important to think about all the causes of fatigue to help improve it.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs are used to reduce inflammation, pain and fever associated with lupus. They include over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen (for example, Nurofen®), or prescription medications such as Voltaren® Celebrex® and Orudis®.
