"Dragoon the Great" is a disguise that Merlin uses to mask himself, to prevent his magic from being discovered by others. This disguise is created by an ageing spell that makes him appear about eighty years older.
Merlin eventually learned to age himself with just a verbal spell, but continued to rely on this potion to change back (Queen of Hearts, The Wicked Day, A Lesson in Vengeance). While under this enchantment, Merlin took on both the appearance and the physically infirmities of an 80-year-old man.
Although Arthur did eventually find out in the show's last episode, he could have easily found out earlier if some of these characters decided to expose the wizard.
His immortality may be because of his powerful magic or his destiny that ties him with the return of Arthur. Merlin's appearance had changed in the final scene and he appears to be an old man, but whether he is permanently old or if he is able to revert himself to his former youth is unknown.
The 15th-century Scotichronicon tells that Merlin himself underwent a triple-death, at the hands of some shepherds of the under-king Meldred: stoned and beaten by the shepherds, he falls over a cliff and is impaled on a stake, his head falls forward into the water, and he drowns.
It is unknown whether Merlin failed or fulfilled his destiny. Though Arthur's death would appear to have averted it, the Great Dragon told Merlin that all he had dreamt of building had come to pass and that when Albion's need was greatest, Arthur would rise again.
Bradley James says in an interview that his character Arthur's friendship with Merlin is stronger than his love for Gwen. Alexander Vlahos said in an interview that “becomes a love story between two men. In a platonic sense, it becomes a brilliant love story between Arthur and Merlin.”
According to the Great Dragon, Merlin's birth had been prophesied by many cultures. The Druids, for example, referred to him as "Emrys" (The Beginning of the End). Life could be difficult in a village as small and isolated as Ealdor.
