Sometimes, guys develop breasts during puberty. This is called gynecomastia (pronounced: guy-nuh-ko-MAS-tee-uh). It's usually due to normal hormone changes during puberty, and almost always goes away on its own within a few months to a couple of years.
The earliest physical change of puberty for girls is usually breast development, which most often begins around 10 or 11 years. But it's perfectly normal for breast development to start anytime between the ages of 7 and 13.
Baby girls and boys will have a small breast bud that can be felt for a few weeks after they are born. These buds of tissue will become the breast tissue in the adult. In early infancy, they can be prominent because of the effects of the mother's estrogen. As the estrogen levels decrease, so does the prominence.
When puberty starts there's a rise in the levels of the hormones oestrogen and testosterone. Oestrogen stimulates the breast to grow and testosterone stops breast growth. As well as the other changes associated with puberty, boys may notice that their breasts are tender or are growing.
Some guys develop a small lump in one or both breasts, which can be tender. This is called gynecomastia, and it's normal. In fact, about half of all boys develop it during puberty. It usually goes away as a guy finishes puberty.
Breast pain in men can have a variety of causes, from muscle strains to a cyst. Some causes might require treatment but are usually harmless. Most causes of breast pain in men are due to problems in breast tissue. These problems are usually treatable, and some will go away on their own.

The earliest sign of puberty in most girls is the development of breast "buds," nickel-sized bumps under the nipple. It is not unusual for breast growth to start on one side before the other. It's also common for breast buds to be somewhat tender or sore.
Hair will start to grow in the genital area. Boys will also have hair growth on their face, under their arms, and on their legs. As the puberty hormones increase, teens may have an increase in oily skin and sweating. This is a normal part of growing.

Gynecomastia is common during adolescence due to the hormonal changes that come with puberty. About half of males between 12 and 16 experience gynecomastia in one or both breasts.
More than one half of boys develop some breast enlargement during puberty. Breast growth often goes away in about 6 months to 2 years. In men, hormone changes due to aging can cause breast growth. This may occur more often in overweight or obese men and in men age 50 and older.
For most girls, their first menstrual period, or menarche (say: MEH-nar-kee), begins about 2 years after she first starts to get breasts. For most girls this is around age 12. But it can be as early as age 8 or as late as 15.
In boys, puberty usually begins between ages 10 and 16. Once it begins, it lasts about 2 to 5 years.
Puberty is a process. After breast development starts, there are a series of changes that involve pubic hair and underarm hair growth, growth spurts, and her first period.
Is it OK to sleep in my bra? There's nothing wrong with wearing a bra while you sleep if that's what you're comfortable with. Sleeping in a bra will not make a girl's breasts perkier or prevent them from getting saggy. And it will not stop breasts from growing or cause breast cancer.
Inside your breasts, the milk-producing glandular tissue and the milk ducts begin to grow. Your areola may get larger and darker in color. The Montgomery glands on the areola start to stand out and your nipples may protrude more.
DO NOT squeeze or massage the newborn's breasts because this can cause an infection under the skin (abscess). Hormones from the mother may also cause some fluid to leak from the infant's nipples. This is called witch's milk. It is common and most often goes away within 2 weeks.
Breast Development
Early in puberty, most boys experience soreness or tenderness around their nipples. Three in four, if not more, will actually have some breast growth, the result of a biochemical reaction that converts some of their testosterone to the female sex hormone, estrogen.
Men can develop nipples that hurt due to cysts, as well as an underlying infection of breast tissue, if nipples are dry or chafed, either due to cold weather or a history of eczema, says Glatter. This leads to cracks and small openings in exposed skin on the nipples and allows skin bacteria to enter.
