(eð) noun. a letter in the form of a crossed d, written đ or ð, used in Old English writing to represent both voiced and unvoiced th and in modern Icelandic and in phonetic alphabets to represent voiced th.
It indicates the present tense of the third person singular of a verb: the one that means he, she or it is doing something now.
ð survived into Early Middle English, but gradually fell out of use in Middle English, disappearing altogether by about the end of the 13th Century. The reason these letters fell out of use, is that the style of the time favored the use of “th” instead.
