She was trained as a Haruspex, which is one who is practiced in the art of divination by reading the entrails of animals that had been sacrificed. According to legend,
Hettie definitely is immortal, though. She's managed to stay alive for centuries by literally hiding her heart from Death. Maybe Johanna has picked up a few tricks from her? The other important DCU character here is David Thewlis' John Dee.
While on the battlefield, he decided that he simply wouldn't die: people only died, he figured, because it was a bad habit into which they fell, and he would have no part of it. In 1389 he shared this theory with his friends while drinking in the Tavern of the White Horse.
Dream is without question one of the strongest characters in The Sandman universe thanks to his powerful and varied abilities and also because he is more than willing to act on his power. Dream is so powerful that he is even willing to venture into Hell itself to confront Lucifer Morningstar when the need arises.
Mad Hettie first appears in Preludes and Nocturnes. She lives as a tramp in London, and is known to John Constantine. In Dream a Little Dream of Me, she claims to be 280 years old, a claim Constantine knows to be true; she was born in 1741.
Nada goes to great lengths to discover who the mysterious man is, eventually eating a magical berry that is said to transport the eater to the place of the person they love. She then discovered that he was the King of dreams, and for the first time, Morpheus falls in love with a mortal.
In the special issue, it is also revealed that Death was known in ancient Greece as Teleute. Just as her brother's, Dream's, realm/domain is known as "The Dreaming", Death's realm/domain is known as "The Sunless Lands".
Destiny – The eldest of the Endless, he is chained to a large tome known as the Cosmic Log, which contains the sum of all existence in its pages. He is much like his book, possessed of unshakable certainty and equanimity but lacking any ability to change or be spontaneous.
7. Delirium. The least powerful of the Endless is poor Delirium, who was once Delight.
Lucifer is even stronger than the Endless, and the only known beings able to rival or surpass his power are Michael and the Presence. Dimensional Travel: Lucifer is capable of traveling throughout realms at will. By projecting flames from his hands, Lucifer is able to create portals to hell.
Hob Gadling appears in the 2022 TV series based on The Sandman. Just like previously, he was granted immortality and agelessness by Death; with Dream meeting him on the same day once a century, to see if he would be ready to accept dying.
The reason why Death didn't intervene to help Dream when he was captured is never addressed by The Sandman. Perhaps the obvious reason is that Death, like Dream and the rest of the Endless, is bound by her duties and responsibilities to every living being in the universe.
In this, she was successful, and when she passed away at the age of 99, Dream arranged for her burial on the island of Naxos, near Orpheus' temple, which was tended daily by Orpheus's priests.
From oldest to youngest they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium, who was previously known as Delight.
Destiny. The oldest of the Endless, Destiny is also the most mysterious. His realm is a garden, through which he walks while reading the Book of Destiny, chained to his wrist (fans of DC television adaptations may recall the Book from its central role in the CW crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths).
While there are other siblings that have been mentioned and not featured in the series, The Prodigal's absence raises more eyebrows than rest. During Morpheus' pensive walk with sister Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) the two briefly discuss The Prodigal's whereabouts, with Death confessing that he was still missing.
Death is the second oldest of the Endless and the elder sister of Dream.
In The Sandman universe, Death is the most powerful Endless. The power levels of the siblings are largely related to their age. The older an Endless is, the more powerful they are. However, despite being the second-oldest Endless, Death is said to be their most powerful member.
Of the six mentioned so far the age order is Destiny > Death > Dream > Desire > Despair > Delirium.
However, there is still someone else we haven't seen, someone the Endless themselves haven't seen in a very long time: the infamous Prodigal. The Prodigal is mentioned many times throughout The Sandman.
Death is one of the most powerful members of the Endless and one of the most powerful beings in existence in the DC Universe. Her ultimate duty as the embodiment of death lasts until the last living thing dies and she puts the universe itself to rest.
Father Time is the personification of Time and rules over his domain. Time is the father to the Endless and with his partner Night, made all of Creation possible. However, in present times, Time and Night are separated and estranged from their families.
If one of the Endless are destroyed then he or she will be replaced by another aspect of their role, but this does not occur if they are simply absent or inactive. In such cases the aspect of existence supervised by that member of the Endless becomes more random and chaotic.
Mother Night is a cosmic being introduced in The Sandman: Overture, the embodiment of the absolute emptiness that predates creation. She is revealed to be the mother of The Endless with her consort, Time.
And all that was part of a long game to take Dream out of the picture. While the Endless are almost all-powerful, they cannot harm humans who are not threats to their kingdoms. The Endless are also forbidden from spilling their family's blood. If they break these rules, they risk their own destruction.
