Often, this is simply a case of access, or lack of it. If one person spends more time at home with the dog, naturally the dog will want to see and spend time with the other partner, too. When the absent partner rewards that behavior by handing out treats upon return, reinforcement and hardwiring occurs.
They Are Seeking Attention
Rover may simply be looking to get his dose of attention. Some attention-seeking dogs become pushy when their owners are on the phone or simply ignoring them, and others become pushy when their owners are getting intimate with a partner. They just want to be part of the fun!
A man's larger body makes it easier to tolerate a larger dog's strength and size. These types of dogs perceive greater strength as more attractive. If a female is the figure of authority, then the dog will view the woman in a similar light.
“This typically has to do with how they were socialized, who takes care of them and their past experiences,” Dr. Bonk told The Dodo. “If a dog is taken care of by a female, they're more likely to prefer females, [whereas] if they're primarily taken care of by a male, they may prefer males.”
Often dogs will follow their owners if their bond is paired over time with a great deal of reinforcement. For example, if a dog learns that good things, such as food, pats, and fun activities come from a particular person, they may be more likely to follow that person.

Clinginess in dogs is often a learned behavior. Dogs learn this behavior from humans by the way we interact with them. If you always give your dog food when they follow you into the kitchen, or you pet them every time they lie next to you, you're teaching them that following you leads to some type of reward.
A female dog can also be an alpha over an unneutered male too, although this would be less common, and would usually occur only if the female had a reasonable size advantage over the male.
There is no significant difference between male or female dogs in terms of protective behaviors. Territorial or protective behaviors are more pronounced in unaltered dogs than in neutered dogs, and breed plays a role as well.
What the study revealed is that the ability to tell gender is dependent on the dog's experience with humans of different genders. Dogs who had one master could not really tell when the voices did and did not match the gender of the human.
Once tied the male dog will often step over the female or be turned by handlers into a position so that the dogs are back-to-back. The tie will usually last for five to ten minutes.
Some dogs seem to adore men. They may be very fond of women and perfectly responsive to them, but an extra level of joy comes to them when interacting with men. We've probably all met dogs like this—they just love guys, especially guys who pay attention to them at all.
In short, dogs do get jealous, and those feelings of jealousy are strikingly similar to human jealousy. You may be able to read some of your dog's emotions through their body language, such as happiness or sadness.
According to experts, many breeds of dogs are prone to jealousy in response to their owners' attention being diverted. Their naturally affectionate personalities can prevent them from stepping back, which can often lead to your dog displaying jealous tendencies towards you or your partner.
Forget turning to your best friends when you're unsure about the new guy you're dating—the best judge of his character could actually be your dog. A new Japanese study shows that dogs can sense when humans mistreat their masters.
Generally female dogs tend to be a little more independent than males dogs and mostly aren't so demanding of attention. They love a big cuddle as much as any male dog, but they tend to take themselves away when they want a bit of down time.
If you have several dogs or intend to add to your canine family, a male may be a better fit. Females tend to have more problems with anxiety and phobias. If your house is a loud and busy place with lots of chaos, a male puppy may be more likely to be content. Sex is just one factor in a puppy's personality.
Female dogs threaten less frequently, but overall are more independent, stubborn, and territorial than their male counterparts.
Wild dogs exhibit similar behaviors, opting to sleep in small, confined areas with pack members they trust to protect against predators. When your dog sleeps right next to you, he is demonstrating trust in his “alpha” human.
Like their human counterparts, dogs develop favorite people over time based on positive experiences and positive associations with that person. Some people use tasty treats and other rewards to create strong bonds with pets, but the best way to build a healthy relationship with your dog is through play.
“Your dog is smart enough to pick up on these changes during pregnancy, both in a physical way — which is how your body will be changing, your stomach, your smell — and in an emotional way, such as your feelings and your mood,” she says.
It's not uncommon for certain breeds to over-attach to their owners, particularly dogs in the working or herding groups that are bred to work side-by-side with their humans.
Velcro Dog syndrome is a phrase people use to describe the behaviour displayed by clingy breeds. It is not, however, full-blown separation anxiety and as a responsible pet owner, it's a good idea to make sure you know the difference.
