If someone in your family is getting text messages meant for you, or vice-versa, it's probably because those devices are sharing the same Apple ID. This typically happens because, at some point, you all wanted to share content you bought from the iTunes store, including apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more.
Set Up "YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT" in Settings
Step 1: Go to Settings. Tap on Messages and then Send & Receive. Step 2: Uncheck the iCloud account or other phone number under YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT. Make sure that only the option of your phone number checked.
Go you each have your own AppleID or do you share the same one. On his phone, go to settings>Messages>Send and receive from. Uncheck your number on his phone. If you share the same apple ID, you also don't want both devices to send and receive from the email address or that'll cross them over too.

If you backup or synchronize your phone to iCloud then anybody who has the details for that account, or even has their phone connected to the same account (a family member, for example), could potentially see your personal text messages.

A quick Google search explained that the redundancy is caused by iMessage. iMessage is Apple's form of instant message communication which enables data to be transmitted between Apple devices using Apple's servers. iMessages can be sent between iPhones, iPods, iPads and Macs.
Unfortunately you cannot do that. If you have multiple phone numbers assigned to a single contact, then the messages thread will be a single thread as you have learned.
Why should you turn off iMessage? If you switch from iPhone to Android, you must turn off iMessage. Otherwise, texts from your iPhone friends won't be delivered to your new phone since your number is still registered on iMessage. You will have to create a new group chat with your iPhone friends on your Android phone.
That's because the texts are being sent to an ID that is listed as an iMessage receive ID on both devices. See Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You can be reached by iMessage at: Correct this so each device has a unique ID.

You will only be able to use Messages/FaceTime on one phone because if both phone are signed into Messages/FaceTime, you will see all messages visible on both phones. Any data synced to iCloud will show on both phones. If you want 2 independent phones, you will need to create another Apple ID.
