There were too many plot points, too many characters, and too many details to keep track of. Even said superfans might find themselves a bit befuddled! The changes from the books were sometimes absolutely insane. The way the season ends with various couples remixed played out like unhinged fan fiction.
Shadow and Bone season 2 has been in Netflix's global Top 10 — in 85 countries — for a month now. The fantasy series also ranked number two on the Nielsen charts, with over 1.14 billion minutes watched by subscribers (including season 1 episodes).
Basically, Shadow and Bone season 2 covers the second and third book in the trilogy: Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising. It also folds (no pun intended)in details from the two Six of Crows books, King of Scars, Rule of Wolves, and The Lives of Saints.
Unfortunately, Shadow and Bone has not been renewed for season 3 yet, and it's getting to the point where it's starting to get a little worrisome.
While they manage early on to find and kill the ice dragon Rusalye, aka the sea whip, it takes them until the end of the season to realize that the final amplifier, the firebird, is actually Mal.
While she doesn't lose her powers as a punishment, she isn't in the clear either. Instead, her consequences are darker – literally. In the final scene, Alina uses her powers again and finds them changed. To Alina's surprise, she performs the Cut with shadows like the Darkling rather than her former light.
The main trilogy gets better with each subsequent book, as Bardugo grows into her own world's potential. But if you want to be pulled in from the get-go, Six of Crows is the way to go.
Mal's Fate and Alina's Powers
Instead, he and Alina are forced to work it out themselves after they track down the firebird (which is real in the books) they discover its power was transferred to Baghra's sister when Morozova used it to resurrect her, then the power passed down her bloodline for generations.
Once Alina comes into her powers, she appears healthier, although her hair turns white at the end of Siege and Storm.
The first one up is, of course, Alina Starkov, the Sun Summoner. When the story opens in Shadow and Bone and we first meet our primary point-of-view character, Alina is 17—which positions her perfectly to fit into the mold of the standard young adult protagonist.
The occurrence left Kaz severely traumatized to the point of being touch-averse: he can't endure direct skin-to-skin contact with another person. Doing so even innocuously induced panic attacks and flashbacks to his helpless time on the raft. As such, he wears gloves constantly to protect himself from pain.
During the Shadow Fold crossing, volcra attack the sandskiff, but Alina lets out a burst of light killing the volcra in order to save Malyen. Better known as the Sun Summoner, Alina is the protagonist of the series. As one of the most powerful Grisha, she is the only one capable of saving Ravka from the Fold.
Conservatively, therefore, Alina could live for at least a century in Shadow and Bone but potentially even longer. Alina could perhaps live as long as the Darkling, who has walked the earth for at least 500 years.
Mal was oblivious to Alina's love from before book one even began. He slept with Zoya and countless others before he realised who was waiting by his back door.
Surprise! It turns out Mal is descended from Baghra's sister, making him a great-nephew of the Darkling. Upon this discovery, Mal makes Alina promise she will kill him for his power if she needs it.
Zoya destroys the remains of The Darkling when she realizes what is happening, but The Darkling's spirit goes into the body of a man named Yuri Vendenen. So, while The Darkling does return in some form, he does not return in the one that people recognize him as.
In this adaptation, Mal is Inej´s brother. Inej doesn't have a brother in the book series.
Kaz Brekker/Rietveld, also known as Dirtyhands, is a 17-year-old master thief with a reputation for doing anything for the right price.

It's best to read the series in order, starting with book one Shadow and Bone, before moving on to Six of Crows and the other Grisha series but they can also be read as standalone adventures.
Since learning of her powers, The Darkling has been obsessed with getting Alina on his side. Whether this is motivated by his fear of being beaten or, as he claims, by the fact that with her, he would no longer face eternity alone is unclear, but he didn't go about it in the best way.
He feels the loneliness of immortality, causing him to fixate on Alina because she had the capacity to be like him. However, he is also shown to truly care for and wants to be loved by his people (the Grisha) and his nation, claiming that all he ever wanted was to create a safe place for people like him.
Between the novels Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, on which season 2 is largely based, Alina loses her Sun Summoner powers completely for a time after a fight with Kirigan. She also ends up gaining a piece of the Darkling's power and vice versa.
Sun Summoners: A suborder of Grisha who can manipulate light. These are the rarest type of Grisha, which is why Alina (Jessie Mei Li) is so important.
