Background play only works in the YouTube mobile apps and requires a YouTube Premium membership. Some videos aren't available for background play or to download offline, even if you have a channel membership.
Check Your Background Playback Settings
Launch the YouTube app and go to Settings. Then go to Background & Downloads and tap Background Play. Make sure background playback is not set to Off.
If you're on Android, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings menu. You'll see a widget with playback controls for your browser. Push the play button to continue listening to your audio.
It's not because of your device. It's because YouTube music doesn't allow playback while screen off. It's only a premium feature, provided by YouTube. Playback feature while screen off is only available for premium subscriptions.
Fix 1: Check whether your YouTube Premium membership has expired. Fix 2: Sign out and sign in to YouTube Premium. Fix 3: Check whether YouTube Premium is available in your location. Fix 4: Check whether the background playback feature is enabled.
Lock your iPhone, then tap the screen or raise it to wake it. Your Lock Screen will show the video in the Now Playing box. Simply tap play and listen away! If you don't lock your phone and instead switch apps without closing the browser, you can also keep playing the video in the background while you use another app!
YubePiP plays YouTube videos Picture in Picture. It enables background audio-only playback. It also allows you to play two videos at the same time, one in full screen and another in PiP.
No need to get YouTube Premium just for this feature.
Well, the official YouTube app for both Android and iOS doesn't allow this but there is a quick workaround to get this done. Playing videos in the background is convenient if the video part of it is not critical — for instance, if you're listening to music or ASMR.
Ambient mode uses a lighting effect to make watching videos in Dark theme more immersive, by casting gentle colors from the video, into your screen's background. Subscribe to the YouTube Viewers channel for the latest news, updates, and tips.
YouTube Is Not Allowed Unrestricted Background Data Usage
Besides checking the YouTube app's settings, you should take a look at your phone's data usage settings. If YouTube isn't allowed to use data in the background without limitations, it may keep pausing by itself.
