When facing Thor, Fury whispered something into the God of Thunder's ear that not only shocked him but left him unworthy to lift his hammer. This event would serve as the catalyst for Jane Foster to claim the hammer, becoming the Mighty Thor, and for plenty of villains to rise in the aftermath.
Is Thor still worthy in Thor: Love and Thunder? It is pretty clear that Mjolnir chose Jane, not because Thor was unworthy, but because Thor's oath had instructed it do so. Sadly, the hammer cannot cure Jane's cancer, and can only transform and temporarily empower her.
Even more people don't know the hammer has a name. During Marvel Comics Original Sin story-line we saw Thor Odinson become unworthy to wield the hammer. During a fight, Nick Fury was able to utter a simple sentence in Thor's ear. Whatever was said to Thor caused him to be unworthy to wield Mjolnir.
Ultimately, Love and Thunder confirms that the God of Thunder is still worthy as Thor wields Mjolnir once more, but the delay both helps Jane and proves Thor's worthiness on a much deeper level.
Gorr is nothing without his “All Black Necrosword,” as mentioned above. It is the weapon that turned him into a God Butcher. It is the event that made Thor Unworthy.
8 Odin Would Definitely Lose To Gorr
However, Odin is basically a glass cannon: powerful enough to challenge enemies but unable to stand against them for long. Gorr would brutalize Odin. Odin's best years are far behind him. Even with the Odinforce on his side, he's died way more than he's won in recent years.
Meanwhile, MCU Phase 4 saw Stormbreaker being wielded by Thor, Gorr the God Butcher, Love, and anyone else who was strong enough to actually lift and swing it. This is because of the respective origins of both legendary Asgardian weapons.
The chemotherapy is attacking the cancerous cells but Mjolnir doesn't identify the cancer as an illness just as another part of her it needs to protect. Plus chemotherapy really does weaken Jane and make her sick so it's easy to see as an illness on it's own.
The Power of Love — Red Norvell
In this process, however, Red proved himself more than worthy of the power of Thor, because of his noble, obedient, and self-sacrificing nature. So, Odin decided to adopt Red as his own son and gave him his own weapon: War-Hammer, created from the same metal as Mjolnir itself.
Yes, even Spider-Man has been worthy of holding the hammer of Thor. This is not your father's Spider-Man (well, actually, it could be if your dad was a kid in 1993), but instead is the Spider-Man of Marvel's distant future of 2099!
Gorr planted seeds of doubt in Thor's mind, forcing him to question whether gods truly are as noble and benevolent as they seem. Nick Fury seizes on that doubt in 2014's Original Sin, telling Thor "Gorr was right" and rendering the god of thunder so disillusioned that he's no longer able to lift Mjolnir.
Starting A War With Jotunheim
Because he was not big enough to let the issue go, he reignited war with the Frost Giants. Even after this was accomplished, Thor failed to see the stupidity and selfishness of his actions. He mocked his father for seeking peace rather than courting war as he does.
A secret we learn in this week's issue that stretches back to Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic's "Godbomb" run on "Thor: God of Thunder." Now we know: Fury simply whispered, "Gorr was right."
Later in the film, a flashback to when Jane and Thor were still a couple shows exactly how she was able to wield Mjolnir. In a moment of wistful affection for his girlfriend, Thor asked his trusty hammer to always protect Jane, and in doing so unwittingly enchanted Mjolnir to do just that.
Odin placed several enchantments upon Mjolnir prior to Thor wielding the hammer: This is reflected in the inscription on the side of Mjolnir, which states: Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. For almost the entirety of Marvel continuity, this has exclusively been Thor.
However, the film also implies that the hammer only sees Jane as worthy because Thor unintentionally revised the rules of Mjölnir, giving it the power to protect her. Captain America didn't need anything special for the hammer to see him as worthy – he's able to wield it without issue in Avengers: Endgame.
6 Aquaman's Had To Do Things He Isn't Proud Of
None of that specifically makes Aquaman unworthy of Mjolnir's might.
And not only that, their mission is noble enough that it's earned the loyalty of Mjolnir. While it is still Thor's hammer, it won't hurt one of the Panther Kings. It's even revealed that in the past, the first Black Panther actually once wielded the hammer himself, using it in unseen battle to protect the world.
To make things clear, Superman has lifted Mjolnir in comic books. In 2003, when Marvel and DC co-produced JLA/Avengers #4 to defeat the ultimate villain Kronos, Superman was able to wield Thor's hammer.
In the comics everytime Jane became Thor, Mjolnir purged her body of toxins. In her case those toxins were the chemotherapy drugs that were at the very least keeping her cancer in check. So everytime she became Thor her condition became worse.
Like Stormbreaker, Mjolnir also allows Thor to wield thunder and lightning; however, it's not capable of summoning the Bifrost. The magic hammer did develop a power Stormbreaker couldn't, though, and it's able to detach its broken pieces to attack multiple enemies at once, before coming together again.
At first it appears that Jane has solved her issue but it soon becomes evident that the hammer is hindering her healing process rather than helping, because it drains her life energy every time she wields it.
Both weapons also appear to have a degree of sentience, with Stormbreaker apparently being envious of Thor's affection for Mjolnir, a characteristic director Taika Waititi attributed to the handle being made from the arm of the adolescent Groot, and carrying over some of that character's moodiness at that age.
Chris Hemsworth's last Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder gave fans got a clear scene of how Stormbreaker felt jealous and betrayed when the god of thunder went to Mjolnir. The scene clearly showed how weapons are also prone to emotional damage in the superhero genre.
Gorr's Daughter Love is Chris Hemsworth's Real-Life Daughter
In the film, Love is Gorr's daughter, who dies in vain on a barren desert planet in the midst of an environmental catastrophe. When Gorr finds his god living in luxury while he suffers, he vows to kill all gods by using a wish from Eternity.
