According to the directors of Avengers: Endgame Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America was always worthy of lifting Mjolnir. But decides not to do it so as not to hurt The god of thunder's ego. “In our heads, he was able to wield it. He didn't know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up.
Meanwhile, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely say that Steve Rogers was genuinely unable to lift the hammer as he was still being held back by lying to Iron Man about Bucky Barnes killing his parents.
“In our heads he was able to wield it, and he didn't know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up” Russo told the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2019.
From start to finish, however, from Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Endgame, Rogers proved he was worthy with the strength of his ideals, the unflinching dedication to doing what was right, regardless of the consequences, and his steadfast dedication to the one thing he was dedicated to the most; people ...
Similarly, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk have also proven to be more physically capable than Captain America in terms of sheer strength, meaning out of all of them, Captain America is, in fact, the weakest.
According to Anthony Russo, he's always been worthy, and during that moment in Age of Ultron, he stopped himself from lifting the hammer fully out of deference to Thor: “In our heads he was able to wield it, and he didn't know that until that moment Ultron when he tried to pick it up.
Like Stormbreaker, Mjolnir also allows Thor to wield thunder and lightning; however, it's not capable of summoning the Bifrost. The magic hammer did develop a power Stormbreaker couldn't, though, and it's able to detach its broken pieces to attack multiple enemies at once, before coming together again.
However, Thor: Love and Thunder took a different approach by making Mjolnir unusable beforehand. The reason that it repaired itself for Jane and not Thor, wasn't necessarily about worthiness as much as it was about neediness and purpose. When Thor was dating Jane, he asked Mjolnir to always protect her.
“Only he who is worthy can life the hammer,” Thor's father, Odin told him. “I knew it,” he said upon seeing Steve wield the hammer. This reaction was a direct callback to a scene in Age of Ultron, in which the Avengers attempted to lift Mjolnir one by one. Only Steve managed to make it budge, much to Thor's concern.
Jarvis doesn't lift Thor's Hammer. Jarvis is an AI. Vision lifts Thor's Hammer. Vision is still very new, freshly created, and hasn't done anything yet that would not make him worthy.
Once Thor had proven his worth, Mjolnir itself returned to him of its own accord and his powers were restored, though he required the hammer to achieve his full strength. Although indestructible and with unmatched power, the hammer has proven unable to break Captain America's shield due to its vibranium composition.
In the original Norse mythology, there is no specific charm that prevents someone from lifting Mjolnir, but it is said to have been so heavy that only Thor could easily wield it as a weapon, with 4 giants or the combined strength of his two sons Modi and Magni being required to even lift it in some writings.
As Ultron was the result of Tony's attempt to put a suit of armor around the world, the death of Zemo's family and his consequent actions were all the result of Tony's misguided decision.
Odin placed several enchantments upon Mjolnir prior to Thor wielding the hammer: This is reflected in the inscription on the side of Mjolnir, which states: Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. For almost the entirety of Marvel continuity, this has exclusively been Thor.
The combination of the vibranium and the cosmic energy from the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead not only gave him life and immense intelligence, but also granted Ultron an extremely large number of superhuman capabilities.
Both weapons also appear to have a degree of sentience, with Stormbreaker apparently being envious of Thor's affection for Mjolnir, a characteristic director Taika Waititi attributed to the handle being made from the arm of the adolescent Groot, and carrying over some of that character's moodiness at that age.
The broken pieces were eventually made into a tourist attraction in New Asgard. Five years after the Snap, Thor time traveled to an alternate 2013 and brought its Mjølnir into the main universe's 2023, where it was used by Steve Rogers during the battle to fight an alternate Thanos.
Hela Was Worthy Enough to Destroy Mjolnir
Many people other than Thor have wielded Mjolnir, including his sister Hela. But the impactful scene in Thor: Ragnarok depicts Hela catching Mjolnir in mid-air before then crushing it to pieces. Odin previously told Thor the power of the Uru metal had no equal.
But when it comes to the weapon's replacement, Stormbreaker – which Thor forges in Avengers: Infinity War – Groot is able to lift it too. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained the mechanics of the hammer/axe thingamajig in a Twitter Q&A. "Mjolnir requires worthiness, not Stormbreaker," they said.
Mjolnir, the Mystical Uru Warhammer
Mjolnir was forged for Thor Odinson's grandfather by the dwarves, who used the core of a star and Uru metal to form the iconic hammer and imbue it with its immense strength and magic. It is nearly invulnerable and is capable of great destruction.
How did Thanos manage to lift Stormbreaker? Thanos was able to lift Stormbreaker because the axe doesn't have worthiness enchantment as Mjlolnir does. Mjolnir is specific when it comes to the wielder's might since the only prerequisite to wielding is that the wielder is “worthy” of its might.
The reason the other original Avengers aren't worthy isn't because they were never selfless, never sacrificed for the greater good or never displayed heroism. They can't lift the hammer because they never reached absolution.
Last year, Joe Russo claimed that Captain America had the power to lift Thor's hammer in Age of Ulton, but pretended he couldn't to keep Thor happy. Regardless, Marvel fans are not happy with Markus' revelation.
