Tasers are very effective against a dog. Yes, it will hurt them briefly, but in the times I've used them, they got the dog to yelp and run away without further escalation needed. Unlike humans though, I've never had them lock a dog up and make them fall over.
Tasers are virtually useless against fur-covered animals; and tranquilizer darts must be placed accurately to be effective, which is difficult when a dog is in attack mode; and the tranquilizer takes several minutes to work during which time the animal can do significant damage.
Among the other popular non-lethal devices used to stop dog attacks, pepper spray and Mace must be relatively accurately directed, and are typically carried in small containers meant for use at close range. Bear spray, pepper spray and Mace have about a 40% success rate in stopping pit bull attacks.
As a side note, Pepper Spray is very effective against highly aggressive dog breeds such as Pit-bulls. I had the unfortunate need to spray a Pit-bull attacking my cattle-dog a few months ago. The Pit immediately stopped it's attack and ran around the entire school yard rubbing it's face in the grass.
Stun guns are effective tools for fending off dog attacks. Buy on Amazon! Stun guns come in various forms, including batons and handheld devices. They use a high-voltage, low-current electrical charge to momentarily disorient the animal.
This time I happened to address the obvious: Carrying a Taser stun gun to prevent dog attacks in puppy park settings is a bad idea. Dogs have been known to die. Unfortunately, I phrased it like this: “Though [Tasers are] considered relatively safe for humans, they're often deadly for dogs.
An electric collar is best used in conditioning training, but not during an actual dogfight. I had a friend tell me that using a stun gun works. Not to shock the dog, but just to hold it in your hand and allow it to snap. The sound of the electrical snap is supposed to cause the dogs to stop fighting.
Resist the impulse to scream and run away. Remain motionless, hands at your sides, and avoid eye contact with the dog. Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly back away until it is out of sight. If the dog does attack, "feed" it your jacket, purse, bicycle or anything you can put between yourself and the dog.
Pearson said don't make eye contact with the dog, stand like a tree and, if you can, put something between you and the aggressive dog, such as a backpack, bike, a rolled-up jacket or an umbrella.
Pepper spray uses capsaicinoids to deter oncoming dogs (or people). Generally, dog pepper spray is less strong than human MACE or human pepper spray because dogs are so much more sensitive to smell. That's not always the case, though. SABRE is a leading pepper spray manufacturer.
Most dogs feel protective over their territory, and when an intruder enters their zone without permission, the dog attacks to defend its land. This can be when someone comes to the door when an owner has their pit bull unrestrained or whenever the dog feels that their territory is threatened.
Generally speaking, pepper spray is legal for defense against animal attacks. It's legal for use in all 50 states, but there are restrictions that vary by location. Before using pepper spray for self-defense from a dog, check your local laws about defensive sprays.
Pepper spray is good but even that is not 100% if a dog has harmful intent. A large strong dog could run right through it and you will be the one who can't see or breathe. A stun gun is probably the best protection without carrying a real weapon although they really have to be attacking you for that work.
Using pepper spray on dogs will disable a canine attacker just the same as a human attacker, but keep in mind that the effects are temporary. The effects of the dog pepper spray will last long enough to get you to safety.
If your dog is biting and/or attacking humans/animals, you honestly only have three options. Surrender your dog to your local humane society, get qualified & professional help with behavior modification and keep your dog, or consider behavioral euthanasia.
Pit Bulls are very active dogs that need a LOT of run around time and exercise, but are generally not compatible with off-leash dog parks. Don't get a young Pit Bull if you live your life in the slow lane.
"The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed that is known for its strength and determination. With a bite force of 240-330 PSI, this breed can definitely bring down larger prey," Sarah-Jane explains.
Depending on the attacker's physical shape and where on the body the stun gun is applied, the charge could disable them for up to 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to escape and call the police.
Among the most effective methods of defense against dog attacks are pepper spray, legal self-defense weapons, a dog defense spray or a pepper gun. Dog experts advise not to immediately run away in fear in the event of a dog attack, as the four-legged friends are usually faster than humans.
A stun gun can take a few seconds to work and must make contact with the attacker in order to be effective. Pepper spray affects the attacker for around 30 minutes or so. By comparison, being hit with a taser can incapacitate an attacker for 5 to 60 minutes.
Use Spray Shield™ (Premier Pet Products, formally called Direct Stop). Spray Shield™ is a citronella spray that can be used to interrupt attacks by surprising/distracting animals with a powerful, unpleasant scent, and has been found to be as effective as pepper spray without the harmful effects on animals and people.
