Antibiotics generally aren't recommended because they can increase the risk of serious complications and they don't appear to help treat the infection. If you have a serious E. coli infection that has caused a life-threatening form of kidney failure (hemolytic uremic syndrome), you'll be hospitalized.
According to [7], E. coli is highly resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin, tetracycline and trimethoprim & sulfamethoxazole.
The cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are considered as 1st line agents and often used to treat community and hospital infections caused by E. coli.
E. coli strains can become resistant to beta lactam antibiotics by producing extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL), which is a plasmid-mediated β-lactamase that is capable of hydrolysing and inactivating β-lactams such as cephalosporins and monobactams (15).
For illness caused by E. coli , no current treatments can cure the infection, relieve symptoms or prevent complications.
Emptying the bladder roughly every two to three hours will help to flush the E. coli bacteria from the urinary tract before an infection can begin. (The longer urine is held in the bladder, the more likely bacteria will multiply.)
A new study shows multidrug-resistant E. coli can live for a long time in the guts and urinary tracts of healthy women. It could potentially lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs caused by this bacteria can be extremely difficult to treat.
Official answer. The main difference between amoxicillin and penicillin is that amoxicillin is effective against a wider spectrum of bacteria compared with penicillin. Both amoxicillin and penicillin belong to the class of antibiotics called penicillins.
Mechanism of Action:
Exerts bactericidal activity via inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding one or more of the penicillin binding proteins (PBPs).
Symptoms include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and occasionally fever. About half of people with the infection will have bloody diarrhoea. People usually notice symptoms 3 to 4 days after they have been infected. But symptoms can start any time between 1 and 14 days afterwards.
Most UTIs are caused by E. coli that live harmlessly in the gut. However, when shed in the feces, the bacteria can spread to the opening of the urinary tract and up to the bladder, where they can cause problems.
Some types of E. coli can cause illness and symptoms such as bloody diarrhea and cramps. Symptoms of E. coli infection usually end in about 1 week with no further problems.
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
People with mild symptoms usually recover on their own without treatment. Antibiotics are not helpful for treating E. coli O157 infections, and may even increase the likelihood of developing HUS. Antidiarrheal agents should not be used either.
About amoxicillin
It is used to treat bacterial infections, such as chest infections (including pneumonia) and dental abscesses. It can also be used together with other antibiotics and medicines to treat stomach ulcers. It's often prescribed for children, to treat ear infections and chest infections.

Amoxicillin fights infections in the body within an hour after taking it. The penicillin-based medication gets its strength from consistent use of multiple doses per day. Amoxicillin often relieves symptoms in less than 72 hours and stays in your system for 24 hours.
Keep in mind that most strains of E. coli are harmless. Even if you do come down with the STEC O157 strain, your symptoms will resolve on their own within five to seven days. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.
(B) Significant numbers of bacteria, however, persist within the bladder tissue up to 6 weeks after infection.
rhamnosus GR-1 can kill E. coli and can disrupt biofilms produced by these microbes (McMillan et al., 2011). Moreover, this strain can modulate aspects of host immunity, including NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinases (Kim et al., 2006; Karlsson et al., 2012).
Boiling fresh spinach or cooking fresh spinach until it reaches 160 degrees, usually for 15 seconds or more, will kill E. coli bacteria.
A kidney infection usually happens when bacteria, often a type called E. coli, get into the tube that carries urine out of your body (urethra). The bacteria travel up to your bladder, causing cystitis, and then up into your kidneys. E. coli bacteria normally live in your bowel, where they cause no harm.
Antibacterial properties
One test tube study found that apple cider vinegar was effective at killing Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which is the bacteria responsible for staph infections.
Bacteria — especially E. coli — are the most common cause of UTIs. Symptoms include needing to pee often, pain while peeing and pain in your side or lower back.
