Formal ceremonies will proclaim Charles king
At the moment of the queen's death, Charles officially became king.
As a future King, Prince William could opt to follow in his father and grandmother's footsteps and use his first name – which would make him King William V.
Prince Charles is presently heir (next in line) to the British throne. He will not become king until his mother, Queen Elizabeth, abdicates (gives up the throne), retires or dies. When either of these happen, Prince Charles may abdicate and pass the throne to his eldest son Prince William.
The succession to the throne is legislated by parliament," she added. However, Morris said if Charles really wanted to step back, he could. "The brute fact is if he wanted to go, no one could stop him," Morris said. "But at least the law can provide for the lawful succession of William."
2. Will Kate Middleton be Called 'Queen'? Not really. If everything goes as planned, the Princess of Wales will likely receive the title of queen consort.
In the same way, Kate Middleton would graduate from Duchess of Cambridge to Queen Catherine when Prince William becomes king, although officially she would also be a queen consort. The couple might get another title upgrade sooner though, when Prince Charles becomes the monarch.
Her Majesty leaves behind over $500 million in personal assets from her 70 years on the throne, which Prince Charles will inherit when he is crowned king.
After William, his eldest son, Prince George, is next in line for the royal throne. Meghan Markle's hubby Prince Harry will most likely never take the throne, as he's behind Prince William and Middleton's children, according to the line of succession determined by Buckingham Palace.
Is William thinking of abdicating then? If William abdicated then George would be King and a Regent would need to be found to cover the next 10 years. That's covered by the Regency Act, and would be adults over the age 21 by position in the succession.
What Kate called the Queen. While the rest of the world is required to address Queen Elizabeth as Ma'am or your majesty, those closest to her are allowed to refer to her as Mama, according to Ingrid Seward, the editor of Majesty magazine. Sign up to British Heritage Travel's daily newsletter here!
Even if the Queen had desired to skip Charles in favor of William, she did not have the power to choose her successor on a whim. The 1701 Act of Settlement is the act of Parliament that determines the succession to the throne and requires that a monarch's heir must be his or her direct successor (and a Protestant).
There's likely no chance he will ever become king himself, and really, nothing will change for the couple now that Charles is king. They will still remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, however, King Charles may need their help along the way.
Prince William will have to wait his turn
Prince William could have become king directly after Queen Elizabeth II only if Charles had died before her, according to Robert Hazell, a professor of government and the constitution at the University College London.
Camilla will also be anointed and crowned during the ceremony for King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
Camilla will take the title of Queen Consort, which indicates that she is the spouse of a king, instead of title of queen because members who marry into the royal family can't inherit the throne.
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan no longer receive money from the Royal Family, and earn their income from commercial arrangements.
That toxic dynamic, according to Harry, catalyzed their departure: The Sussexes were crumbling under incessant negative media coverage that included an intimate letter between Meghan and her estranged father published in The Daily Mail. (The duchess even began to have suicidal thoughts.)
Prince Harry has described how he “can't ever get out” of the royal family, but he does not believe it will ever be possible for him and the Duchess of Sussex to return to the UK as working royals.
Kate Middleton wore a pearl choker that once belonged to Her late Majesty; Meghan wore a pair of pearl and diamond drop earrings that were a gift from the Queen on the occasion of their first joint engagement together in 2018, the same year Meghan married into the family.
Radar Online reported in September 2022 that both Meghan and Lilibet will be left out of the Queen's inheritance.
"Without William, Kate would curtsy to Camilla; with him, she would not," the source continued. "That's unless Prince Charles is present, in which case she would." The order of curtsying, however, can change. This could happen when people marry into the family.
The line of succession follows Charles' blood descendants, so Camilla will never become the actual queen, even if he dies before her.
Under rules set out by George V in 1917, the grandchildren of the monarch automatically receive royal titles. As grandchildren of King Charles III, Archie and Lilibet now have the right to be prince and princess, whereas they did not immediately qualify as the great-grandchildren of the Queen.
