Note: The Olive Oil kills by covering the holes through which the lice breathe. If lice are not completely covered by oil, they may not die but the oil will slow them down allowing them to be caught in the nit comb.
Using Olive Oil On Your Hair
Basically, you apply the olive oil to your hair, and leave it on for 6 to 8 hours. This is supposed to suffocate the lice. You then use a lice comb to physically remove them from your hair. You repeat this process until no more lice shows up in the lice comb.
Aniseed, cinnamon leaf, and tea tree oil have shown promising results. Mixing a few drops of any of these essential oils in coconut oil could help kill the lice and neutralize their eggs.
Use heat. Wash any items used or worn by the person in hot water, and dry them on high heat. Lice and nits die when exposed to temperatures higher than 130 F for more than 5 minutes. Wash anything that touched the person's skin or scalp, including jackets, hats, scarves, pillowcases, sheets, and headbands.

Lice and nits can live on pillows and sheets. Lice glue their eggs to the hair strands of their host. However, if a piece of hair with an egg falls out while the lice host is sleeping, an egg could end up on pillows or sheets.
Life Cycle:
Nits take about 1 week to hatch (range 6 to 9 days). Viable eggs are usually located within 6 mm of the scalp. ) and become adults about 7 days after hatching.
