For example, a 1907 Saint-Gaudens in good condition may sell for around $1139 or close to the current price of gold. A 1908-S, on the other hand, may sell for over $8600 if in uncirculated condition.

Currently, with the exception of the one sold on July 30, 2002, 1933 double eagle coins cannot be the legal possession of any member of the public, as they were never issued and hence remain the property of the United States government.
The rarest $20 St. Gaudens gold coins are from 1933. The next rarest coins are from 1927-D. 1920-S, 1921, and 1930-S $20 gold coins are also very scarce.

Perform a Magnet Test
Gold is a precious metal not susceptible to magnetic forces. Thus coins containing a high concentration of gold will not react during a magnet test. This test is an easy way to detect counterfeit gold coins since they often have inexpensive metals that are magnetised.
Gold is a very soft metal, so scratching it with a hard object like ceramic will leave a golden or a yellowish streak. On the other hand, fake gold is often made of metals that are darker in color, so you'll see a dark streak instead.
