Women's dress size chart: International Australian sizes are measured the same as the UK. So if you're a 10 in Australia, you'll need a 10 from a UK-based store. If you're purchasing from an American store, you'll need to go 2 sizes smaller. So if you're a 10 in Australia, you're a 6 in the US.

Tips When Buying in UK Sizes
If you are a woman go for higher size than your US size when buying clothes. If you are a US 4, in UK size, you will be a UK 8. If you are a man, go for the same size when buying clothes. For example, a size US 30-32 is the same as a UK 30-32.
A few easy rules to remember:

UK size 8 in women's dresses is US size 4. This is equivalent to the S international size. This dress size has a bust of 82-85 cm (32-33.5 inches), a waist of 65-68 cm (25-26.5 inches), and a hips size of 90-94 cm (35-37 inches).

I think the average size in the UK is 14-16 for women but for most people a UK 14 puts them in the overweight category for weight. Some stores will consider a medium to be a size 10, while others a size 12-14. As an average, a Medium is likely to be a around a size 12.
