Despite the name, identical twins are rarely completely identical. Their skin tone, weight, height or personality, to name a few characteristics, may be different. How does this happen? Every time a cell divides — as occurs in the developing embryo — your DNA must replicate, a very complicated process.
Identical, or monozygotic (MZ), twins have 100 percent of their genes—including those that influence risk for alcoholism—in common, whereas fraternal, or dizygotic (DZ), twins share (on average) only 50 percent of the genes that vary in the population (see figure). Common Environmental Sources.
That's because so-called identical twins pick up genetic mutations in the womb, as their cells weave new strands of DNA and then split into more and more cells. On average, pairs of twins have genomes that differ by an average of 5.2 mutations that occur early in development, according to a new study.

Monoamniotic-monochorionic Twins
This is the rarest type of twin, and it means a riskier pregnancy as the babies can get tangled in their own umbilical cords. If you have monoamniotic-monochorionic twins, your healthcare provider will monitor your pregnancy closely.
Identical twins are almost always the same sex, although there are some rare exceptions to this rule. Because identical twins occur when a single fertilized egg splits and forms two embryos, each embryo has the same chromosomes (usually, XX for girls or XY for boys).
As a result of the environment, chemicals called “epigenetic marks” attach to the chromosomes and can turn specific genes on or off. So identical twins with identical DNA may have different genes turned on, causing them to look and act differently, and even to develop different diseases such as cancer.
The study appears in Behavior Genetics. ASD is a developmental disorder that affects how a person behaves, interacts with others and learns. Previous studies have found that when one identical twin has ASD, chances are extremely likely that the other twin has it, too.

You've probably heard of identical and fraternal twins, but a report released this week says there's a third kind -- sesquizygous twins or "semi-identical." Researchers say they share anywhere from 50 to 100% of their genomes.
In 99.9% of cases boy/girl twins are non-identical. However, in some extremely rare cases resulting from a genetic mutation, identical twins from an egg and sperm which began as male (XY) can develop into a male / female pair.
Remember, monozygotic (identical) twins don't run in families—they are random. You may not know if your great-granduncles were identical or not and often there is no way to know for sure without DNA testing. That being said, twins that share a close physical resemblance are more likely to be identical than fraternal.
If twins are a boy and a girl, clearly they are fraternal twins, as they do not have the same DNA. A boy has XY chromosomes and a girl has XX chromosomes.

If one egg is fertilised by two sperm, it results in three sets of chromosomes, rather than the standard two - one from the mother and two from the father. And, according to researchers, three sets of chromosomes are "typically incompatible with life and embryos do not usually survive".
With contemporary management, survival rates for monoamniotic twins are around 90 percent.
To form identical or monozygotic twins, one fertilised egg (ovum) splits and develops into two babies with exactly the same genetic information. To form fraternal or dizygotic twins, two eggs (ova) are fertilised by two sperm and produce two genetically unique children.
"[Two sets of] identical twins will not have identical offspring," says Professor Rodney Scott, head of medical genetics at the University of Newcastle. The only way we get identical offspring is when a fertilised egg splits into two cells. "Those identical cells grow into identical twins," says Scott.
Identical twins are more likely than non-identical twins (or other siblings) to both be right-handed or left-handed, but many twins have opposite hand preferences.
Twins might share the same DNA, but they almost certainly don't share the same moles, freckles, or birthmarks. It can be helpful to take pictures of each child's birthmarks so that if you do get to the point where you need to rely on birthmarks to tell them apart, you'll be able to.
