Kiwi fruit is acidic food. It contains a high concentration of citric acid, malic acid, quinic acid, and folic acid. It is about as acidic as an orange, but less acidic than lemons and limes. Due to its acidic nature, it has specific effects on the human body.
Kiwifruit have known positive effects on digestion. During clinical intervention trials using kiwifruit to improve constipation, upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as abdominal discomfort and pain, indigestion, and reflux were also alleviated.
A scientific study* has confirmed that eating kiwi fruits could aid people with poor digestion, especially after consuming a heavy meal with lots of proteins. If these proteins are not digested properly, it can lead to digestion problems such as bloating.
Melons – Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are all low-acid fruits that are among the best foods for acid reflux.
Total acid content is relatively high in kiwifruit (1–3 % w/w fresh weight) of which 40–60 % can be quinic acid, 40–60 % citric acid and 10 % malic acid. The acid:sugar balance affects the acceptance of kiwifruit by consumers.
Clear evidence is provided that green kiwifruit, and the enzyme actinidin itself, can provide enhanced upper-tract digestion (particularly gastric) of a variety of food proteins, which lends support to a role for dietary kiwifruit as a digestive aid.
Acidity. The acidity of fruits may change depending on growing conditions. However, most studies show lemons to be more acidic than kiwifruits. The pH of lemons equals 3.1, whereas kiwifruits have a pH of 5.6 [2] [3].
The most acidic fruits are lemons, limes, plums, grapes, grapefruits and blueberries. Pineapples, oranges, peaches and tomatoes are also high in acid. It would be a mistake to remove these from our diet – after all, they are really nutritious and our body needs them.
Avocados are a highly alkaline and nutritious fruit that host an array of health benefits. While it may get a bad rap for its fat content, it's actually a great source of monounsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid which has been linked to reduced inflammation, heart disease, and cancer prevention.
While avocados are a very good-for-you food, thanks to its healthy fats6, if your diet is already packed with fat, eating high-fat avocados could bring about acid reflux (healthy nut butters may be a culprit here, too). Since guac is always extra, save a little money the next time you're out and avoid it!
Kiwi Allergies
Anyone with a severe allergy should avoid these fruits ( 17 , 18 ). Those who suffer from mild symptoms may have oral allergy syndrome or latex food allergy syndrome ( 19 , 20 ).
There are two types of allergic reactions to kiwis: A standard food allergy can involve abdominal symptoms, rash, and breathing problems. Oral allergy syndrome (OAS), also called pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS), is a condition where the body mistakes certain foods for pollen. It produces a mild allergic reaction.
Bleeding disorders: Kiwi might slow blood clotting. In theory, kiwi might make bleeding disorders worse. Allergies: Kiwi may cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to other fruits, plants, or spices such as avocado, birch pollen, fig, hazelnut, latex, poppy seed, rye, sesame seed, or wheat.
Noncitric fruits such as melons, apples, pears, and bananas are less likely to trigger reflux symptoms. Bananas are especially good for neutralizing stomach acids because they are high in potassium and low in pH (acidity).
Luckily, there's Vitamin-C-rich kiwifruit, which is high in fibre and less likely to cause bloating.
There are different types of blueberries, and the pH level also varies. However, the scale usually falls between 3.11 and 3.35. As a result, these fruits are classified as acidic. However, there is no danger in enjoying blueberries in moderation.
While whole eggs are relatively pH neutral, egg white is one of the few food products that is naturally alkaline, with an initial pH value that can be as low as 7.6 at time of lay, but with increasing alkalinity as the egg ages, and can reach pH of 9.2.
Yogurt, though acidic in nature, is a low acid-forming food, because it does not affect the acid-alkaline balance of the body.

At harvest, kiwifruit contain 0.9–2.5% total acidity, with 40–50% as citrate 40–50% as quinate, and 10% as malate.
According to this study, the fresh juices of avocado and kiwi could protect against peptic ulcer and its other side effects. This may be due to the high content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in these juices.
