The sith use fear and feel fear. It is their tool for control as well as power. The jedi reject fear and drive it away and it is one reason why the council failed because they didn't teach to overcome fear but to evade and avoid it.
Jedi and Sith alike fear the loss of power, but the Sith choose to harness that fear as a source of strength.

Having faced his father once before, Luke was familiar with his tactics and used the force to gain an upper-hand. In Star Wars Canon, only Luke Skywalker can be acknowledged as the one who truly defeated Darth Vader.
Appealing to the hate and conflict within him, Darth Sidious goaded Luke into attacking. Vader defended the Emperor and he and Luke were locked in mortal combat. Luke lost control of his anger, viciously attacking Vader, finally beating him down and chopping off his hand with his lightsaber.
By far, Skywalker's most infamous use of it was upon learning of the death of his wife, Padmé Amidala, after his transformation into Darth Vader.
