Those who have nerve damage, open drainage angles, and an intraocular pressure above the normal range (greater than 21 mm Hg) are said to have primary open angle glaucoma.
Normal intraocular pressures average from 12-21 mm Hg. The “mm Hg” refers to millimeters of mercury, a scale for recording eye pressure. Anything that exceeds 21 mm Hg is considered hypertensive. A problem in the drainage of fluid produced in the eye causes increased pressure.
If glaucoma is present, patients with intraocular pressure above 14 mmHg should be treated, as in such cases there is always a "pressure risk factor".
Occasionally, a person may have a “borderline” eye pressure, which means that, although the pressure is elevated, there is no evidence of glaucoma damage. If you are a Glaucoma suspect with a borderline pressure, your doctor may not prescribe medication immediately.
Measuring Eye Pressure
Normal eye pressure ranges from 12-21 mm Hg, and eye pressure of greater than 21 mm Hg is considered higher than normal. When the IOP is higher than normal but the person does not show signs of glaucoma, this is referred to as ocular hypertension. High eye pressure alone does not cause glaucoma.
Changes of mean IOP according to age. For the cross-sectional study, we used seven age groups classified by decades. Average IOP increased from 12.7 mm Hg in subjects in their 20s to 14.0 mm Hg in those in their 40s. Then IOP decreased from 13.9 mm Hg in those in their 60s to 13.1 mm Hg in those in their 70s.
Glaucoma is treated by lowering intraocular pressure. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, oral medicines, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of approaches.
Open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, results in increased eye pressure. There are often no early symptoms, which is why 50% of people with glaucoma don't know they have the disease. There is no cure (yet) for glaucoma, but if it's caught early, you can preserve your vision and prevent vision loss.
The simple answer is this: usually nothing at all. Open-angle glaucoma increases eye pressure so gradually that individuals often don't feel the pressure building up in the eye. In fact, from the outside, there's typically no way to tell a healthy eye from one with open-angle glaucoma.

Stage one is characterized by a change in the drainage system that leads to an increase in intraocular pressure. Stage two occurs when there is a noticeable change in vision that causes symptoms such as blurry vision or eye pain. Stage three occurs when there is a significant increase in eye pressure.
By the time you notice vision loss from glaucoma, it's too late. The lost vision cannot be restored, and it's very likely you may experience additional vision loss, even after glaucoma treatment begins.
Untreated glaucoma can progress to blindness within several years. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a less common form that can impair vision much more quickly. Early diagnosis and treatment usually results in excellent success and saved vision.
Glaucoma is a slowly progressing problem. On an average, untreated Glaucoma takes around 10-15 years to advance from early damage to total blindness. With an IOP (Intraocular Pressure) of 21-25 mmHg it takes 15 yrs to progress, an IOP of 25-30 mmHg around seven years and pressure more than 30 mmHg takes three years.
Considerable caffeine consumption may elevate intraocular eye pressure associated with glaucoma. Drinking more than five cups of caffeinated coffee per day can increase risk of glaucoma as well. Alcohol consumption should also be limited. Lastly, identify any food allergies.
Doctors use different types of treatment for glaucoma, including medicines (usually eye drops), laser treatment, and surgery. If you have glaucoma, it's important to start treatment right away. Treatment won't undo any damage to your vision, but it can stop it from getting worse.

Dangerously High Eye Pressure
Eye pressure levels between 21-30 mmHg associated with glaucoma usually cause damage over a number of years. However, an IOP in the 40-50 mmHg range can lead to retinal vascular occlusion, a potentially serious condition in which blood vessels that serve the retina are blocked.
Doctors know that increased blood pressure results in increased eye pressure, possibly because high blood pressure increases the amount of fluid the eye produces and/or affects the eye's drainage system.
