Attacks on cattle tend to target calves and young stock. Often wild dogs continually harass a single cow and calf or shadow a herd until there is an opportunity to attack. Calves are bitten on the hamstrings, shoulders, lower back or ears.
Why do dogs attack livestock? Dogs have a hunting instinct, which is triggered by the sight and scent of 'prey' – especially if the animals start to run away. “People tend to underestimate their dog's innate hunting instinct.
When dogs and cows are living together, they will each have areas where they sleep, eat, and exercise. While dogs and cows have different needs, you may find that a harmonious dog and cow relationship is one in which your dog has found some spots near the cow where he can be near his friend without getting hurt.
Cattle can feel threatened by your dog, which they will perceive as a predator. This is especially true for mother cows, who naturally become aggressive when trying to protect their young.
The Ramblers Association point out that "cows see dogs as a much greater threat than humans". Cattle will instinctively become aggressive towards a chasing dog when protecting calves, often following the dog as it returns back to its owner.
As a prey species, cattle have an inherent fear of unfamiliar objects, situations, smells, sudden movements and noises. As well they can experience fearfulness in situations where they are solitary or isolated. Understanding this is critical to managing them in a low stress manner.
Sheep, cows, pigs, goats, chickens and other animals are easily worried by things that could threaten them. Dogs who chase – even if they do not catch or bite the livestock – can still cause physical harm to farm animals by running towards them.
Two cows can fight for a long period with resting periods in between. Each cow will rest while pushing its muzzle between the udder and hindquarter of the other cow to immobilize it. Aggression toward people usually includes bunting, kicking, and crushing. Aggressive and dangerous animals should be culled.
Some people like to introduce the dog to cows or horses through a fence (with the dog on a leash) and others find that walking through a pasture while gradually getting closer to the animal is a better way to keep the pup calm. Either way, the handler is the guide and should always be in charge in any situation.
Remain calm and continue walking on quietly and quickly, trying to pass around them without making any startling movements. Cows will most likely leave you alone once they realize you are not a threat. If you detect an aggressive cow or a threatening group of cows, keep moving calmly and do not make direct eye contact.
Walk together. Once your dog is not reacting to being around the cow, take the cow by the harness and your dog's leash, and walk them on either side of you. If you find this challenging, you can have a helper lead the cow. Make sure to reward the cow too for her calm behavior.
Cows do seem to enjoy petting, at least some of the time. One study showed that eye-white percentage decreased in cows after gentle petting, which implied increased happiness and relaxation.
While cows can doze off and sleep lightly on their feet, when it comes to REM sleep, they lie down just like the rest of us. This is true not just of cows, but of most other large herbivores as well – horses, bison, rhino, and more.
Aggression. Aggression in cattle is usually a result of fear, learning, and hormonal state. Aggression between cows is worse than that between bulls. Horned cattle will bunt (push or strike with the horns) and strike an opponent on the side.
Signs of aggression include erratic movements, tail flicking, ground pawing, turning sideways, pinned back ears, and snorting. If an animal becomes agitated, the best thing to do may be to wait until the animal calms down before trying to move it.
The direct threat is head-on with head lowered and shoulders hunched and neck curved to the side toward the potential object of the aggression (Photo 2). Pawing with the forefeet, sending dirt flying behind or over the back, as well as rubbing or horning the ground are often components of the threat display (Photo 3).
They are protective of their family and property. Some are particularly suspicious of strangers, so early socialization is important — you do not want your dog biting the Avon lady. They can do well with other dogs and cats if they are socialized properly.
With fierce devotion to their owners, Australian Cattle Dogs often bond strongly to one person and will object to being separated from them.
Loyal to their owners and wary of strangers, they are fiercely protective when used as a watch dog, although they are not barkers. The Australian cattle dog tends to be aggressive with other dogs and may display dominance and herding behaviors toward children.
Cow cries before slaughter. They sense their final destiny. Don't be a reason behind their suffering.
Cows are more sensitive to noises than humans, especially high pitched noises that can hurt their ears. Remember that high pitched sounds in the wild are used as alarm calls when a predator is around. For example, never yell near or at a cow. Loud noises can scare cows and may cause kicking, charging or running.
Cows often moo when they're stressed out, Decker says — it may be that they're caught in a fence or they're too hot. "It's when something's out of the ordinary that they need to moo," he says. "It's 'I'm hungry, farmer come feed me. ' It's 'my baby's not near me, let me find my baby calf.
If you must walk through a field of cows, make sure you keep your dog on a short lead. Livestock worrying is a serious offence. Don't take the risk. Move calmly through the field and stick to the path, unless it is safer to walk around a herd.
Chances are the cows will leave you alone once they establish that you pose no threat. If you walk through a field of cows and there happen to be calves, think twice; if you can, go another way and avoid crossing fields.
Do cows have feelings? Yes! Even though we can't ask cows how they're feeling, research has shown that cows have complex emotional lives. They don't just experience the two basic emotions—stress and contentment—they experience a full spectrum of complex emotions, including excitement, love, sadness, and fear.
