“Makeup mirrors typically have a regular side and a magnifying side with a concave mirror. If the concave side is placed into direct sunlight, the mirror can focus the sun's rays and start a fire on anything combustible,” according to CTV.
The likelihood is very, very slim, however; you have the right kind of mirror, it actually can occur," says Chief Solomon of the West Columbia Fire Department. He says concave mirrors can cause the fires.
Garden mirrors can cause fires when they are concave and direct the sun's rays onto a combustible material with a low flashpoint. Paraboloid mirrors are better fire-starters than spherical concave mirrors. Plane and convex mirrors won't cause fire as they don't concentrate the sun's thermal energy.
Investigations into the fires found they were both caused by the sun's rays being magnified off a mirror onto combustible materials. Both fires occurred at similar times of day, between 2pm and 2.30pm.
Special care should be taken with convex and concave shaving or make-up mirrors which can magnify the sun's rays onto combustible items such as blinds, curtains or bedding, causing them to ignite.” However, it is not just mirrors that can cause these types of fires.
Avoid direct sunlight
Just as indoors you have to be wary vases and windows don't set your sofa on fire, outdoors you need to make sure the mirror won't focus the sun directly onto anything that would burn easily. Simply put the mirror in an area that's more shady or at an angle to the most intense spots of sunlight.
The idea of hanging a mirror above the fire is to enhance positive room features; it's also an auspicious Feng Shui practice to place a mirror over a fireplace as the water element of the mirror balances the fire element, thus bringing in good energy into the room.
When a ray of light strikes a plane mirror, the light ray reflects off the mirror. Reflection involves a change in direction of the light ray.
It might not be obvious the risks that come from glass, mirrors and other reflective items, but when exposed to sun rays directly, they can become a huge fire hazard. There have been reports of fires started from glass tables, crystal door handles and mirrors.
It Can Disturb Sleep
Even if the room is dark, any light reflected off the mirror can cause discomfort and prevent you from falling asleep or staying asleep. It could also give you the impression that you are being watched.
However, high heat (>300°F) and excessive thermal variations can cause glass to shatter or break. Glass is a poor thermal conductor and rapid changes in temperature (roughly 60°F and greater) may create stress fractures in the glass that may eventually crack.
Heat can be reflected by the mirror. Mirrors reflect light and light carries heat energy. Heat is electromagnetic radiation. Heat radiation (as opposed to particle radiation) is the transfer of internal energy in the form of electromagnetic waves.
One of the easiest match-free ways to start a fire is to use flint and steel. Flint and steel kits can be purchased relatively inexpensively and are easy to start a fire with if you have a tinder kit, especially if your tinder kit includes charcloth.

If you struggle with a poorly lit bedroom (or living room for that matter), there's a simple hack you can try that'll multiply the brightness of your space. The trick? Placing a lamp in front of a mirror!
Normally, much of the light from an electric light is absorbed by the walls of a room (and a lot is also reflected which is why you can see!). Mirrors are much more reflective and will bounce the light back so of course they can be used to increase the general brightness in a room.
Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and shiny, like glass, water or polished metal, the light will reflect at the same angle as it hit the surface. This is called specular reflection.
About Mirrors and Front Doors
The classical schools tend to recommend against a mirror facing the front door do so because for them, the reflection of a mirror reflects energy back. Therefore, a mirror reflecting the front door pushes away energy, rather than welcomes qi into the home.
Avoid Mirrors in the Kitchen
Conversely, feng shui guidelines generally advise against placing mirrors in the kitchen—especially if they're facing a stove—because such placement is believed to host negative energy.
Generally speaking, Feng Shui experts do not recommend placing a mirror directly across from the door leading into your room, but rather on a wall perpendicular to it. If you have placed your bed in the correct commanding position, it means the mirror won't be placed behind the bed but along the side.
Where you have a mirror or any other glass object, such as an ornament, that is curved, this allows the glass to act as a lens. When the sunlight hits it, it becomes concentrated and, if the rays are bounced onto something flammable (such as curtains or soft furnishings) then a fire can start.
The dining room is the best place in the house to have a mirror. The dining room of any house is the “vault” for wealth, health and prosperity. A mirror, if placed in the right place in this room of the house, can multiply the wealth in the house.
It was the sexual revolution in the 70's and people would use mirrors on the ceiling over the bed to aid in the visual stimulation during sex.
