Ear mites are tiny skin parasites that cause intensely itchy ears and often lead to ear infections. Any cat can catch ear mites but they are most common in kittens. The most common way for a cat to catch ear mites is from another cat, but they can also be picked up from the home, garden and environment.
Ear mites are transmitted through social interaction with other infected cats, which can include grooming, sleeping and playing together. All cats should be checked regularly for any signs of ear mites. Ear mites can be successfully treated with a number of medications.
They can catch them from the environment, or another animal. Ear mites are not species specific, meaning that a cat can pick them up from a dog, and vice versa. Ear mites can be spread through direct contact, or your pet could pick them up from another animal's environment.
Getting to the Core of the Problem
Ear mites get into pets' ears when they lay down and contact an area where there are mites that will crawl into their ear canals. This can happen outside initially, but once your pet has ear mites, they can be in your carpet, on your couch or anywhere your pet has laid his head.
You'll want to do a thorough cleaning to avoid those trouble makers from coming back and setting up shop in your pet's precious ears … AGAIN! Ear mites can live 4-6 days without feeding on a host. Since they're microscopic they can be living in your carpet or on your couch.
Vacuum and dust regularly.
Vacuuming and washing fabrics should take care of the problem, but to get rid of mites completely you must do it regularly. Note that you should also dust as often as you vacuum!
Spotted within Jazmine's ear canal, mites may also live on the skin or even underneath it to feed off dead skin tissue or human secretions like ear wax and skin oils. Although infestation is rare among humans, some ear mites are easily transmitted by jumping from one person or animal to another.
“There are many topical, oral, and systemic agents,” Dr. Miller notes, “and most—such as ivermectin—are highly effective. Even one old-time remedy—baby oil—can do the job. A few drops put into an affected ear several times a day for a month or so will usually smother the mites.”
Signs your cat may have ear mites
This often results in them: shaking their head or scratching their ears excessively. having red and inflamed ears caused by extra wax and irritation. producing a black, dry ear discharge which can sometimes let off a bad smell.
How long does it take to get rid of ear mites in cats? It will take at least three weeks after treatment begins for the mites to be completely gone. Over the course of this time period, your cat's itchiness should begin to subside as the medication takes effect.
Unfortunately you will always need to treat ear mites in your cat because they will not go away on their own. If treating ear mites in cats is delayed for too long you run the risk of chronic ear infections.
This causes severe itching and, if left untreated, can cause bacterial infections, swelling of the ear canal and eventually partial or total deafness. The mites can also travel all over your cat's body, causing itching and swelling. Again, left untreated they can lead to systemic infections.
So how can you tell the difference? Cats that aren't suffering an ear mite infection have a lighter brown earwax color that does not smell. The darkly colored earwax caused by an ear mite infection will often have ear discharge resembling coffee grounds.
Ear mites can be killed using over-the-counter medicines, but be sure you choose one that is safe to be used on cats. Pyrethrin is the active ingredient in most ear mite medications, and it's toxic to cats. Most vets recommend using a topical solution that contains ivermectin as the primary ingredient instead.
Baking Soda. Baking soda can be an effective treatment for ear mites in dogs, but be careful not to allow your dog to ingest it. Mix one cup of warm water with one teaspoon of baking soda. Soak this in a cotton ball and use it to rub your dog's ear.
