Centrelink and the Family Assistance Office will electronically secure your Tax File Number. No one can look at your Tax File Number on Centrelink's computer system or on your paper files. This also means that if you lose or forget your Tax File Number we cannot tell you what your number is.
We can't pay you if you don't give us your TFN. If you have a partner, we'll need their TFN too. If you or your partner don't have a TFN, or don't know what yours is, you can apply for one through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Read more about applying for a TFN on the ATO website.
Other ways to find your TFN
If you don't have a myGov account, you can usually find your TFN on: your income tax notice of assessment (NOA), if you have lodged a tax return. letters you have received from us, such as a statement of account. a payment summary or income statement (provided by your employer)
Sign in to myGov and select Centrelink. Select MENU from your homepage. Select Documents and appointments, then Documents and Request a document.
We pass approximately 100,000 records to Centrelink each week. Around 12% of these are found to be Centrelink clients. ATO data is provided under table item 1 in table 1 in section 355-65 of Schedule 1 to the Taxation Administration Act 1953 (TAA).
If you already have a TFN and don't remember the number, you can find it online in ATO online services. You will need to sign in to your myGov account or login to the ATO app. If you don't have a myGov account, see Create a myGov account and link it to the ATO.
Can't find your TFN? You can find it on your income tax notice (notice of assessment), group certificate, super statement, or in your myGov account.
You should receive your TFN within 28 days from when we receive your completed application and the required documents have been sighted by Australia Post. To prevent delays, don't lodge another application. We appreciate your patience during the processing period.
You'll only receive one TFN and applying for a second one won't give you a new one - everyone only gets one. If you haven't received your TFN just yet, it hopefully won't be too much longer. It's important not to keep applying as this could cause a further delay.

Once a TFN has been issued, you keep it for life; there is no need to reapply if your circumstances change. MAY I WORK IN PAID EMPLOYMENT WITHOUT A TAX FILE NUMBER? Yes, however without a TFN tax will be deducted from your income at the maximum rate, even it you are earning too little to pay tax normally.
If you get a taxable Centrelink payment, you may need to lodge a tax return at the end of the tax year. You'll get a Centrelink payment summary if you get any of these taxable Centrelink payments: ABSTUDY Living Allowance, if you're 16 or older. Age Pension.
This shouldn't be an issue, as we'll likely pick up the duplicate application in our system and only issue one TFN for you. Generally if we find a duplicate it will be checked and corrected.
Only one TFN is issued to you for your lifetime. Once a TFN has been issued to you, there is no need to apply for a new one if your circumstances change, for example, if you move interstate, change jobs, change your name in any way, have investments, or claim government benefits.
If you've received the TFN after applying then the most recent one we've sent you should be it. If you've got two TFN's written down and are unser of which to use, again the most recent one will be it. You're welcome to contact our individuals area to make sure there aren't any issues.

When you start a job or open a bank account in Australia you'll be asked to supply your TFN. Although you're not required to provide a TFN to open an Australian bank account, if you don't provide your TFN, we're required by law to withhold tax.
If your bank doesn't have your tax file number (TFN) it will withhold tax from your interest at the highest marginal tax rate. You can claim a credit for the amount of tax withheld when you lodge your tax return.
Our service standard for processing TFN applications is 28 days from the date we receive the application, and the delay may depend on how you applied. If you sent a paper application, the time it takes for the form to reach us may vary depending where it's been posted from and the postage service in the area.
You can apply for a TFN at any age. However, if you are: 12 years old or under – your parent or guardian must sign on your behalf 13 to 15 years old – you or your parent or guardian can sign 16 years or older – you must sign your application yourself.
When a TFN has not been provided. You must withhold 47% from any payment you make to a resident employee and 45% from a foreign resident employee (ignoring any cents), if all of the following apply: they have not quoted their TFN.
If they have a company, partnership or trust ABN then a TFN would have been allocated to them at the same time and they can also contact us to obtain the TFN. If they have a non resident ABN then they will need to apply for a TFN, though it cannot be back dated nor is it required to be.
You are unable to cancel or terminate your TFN, it stays with your name for life.
