As inheritances are typically hard to predict, they are exempt from the Centrelink income test. For example, if you received an inheritance of $200,000 Centrelink would not consider this to be $200,000 of income.
Under this rule, a lump sum inheritance payment is exempt from the income test. However, the manner in which you use the lump sum payment may cause it to be counted as income or an increase in your assets by Centrelink.

There are no inheritance or estate taxes in Australia. However, you may have tax obligations for the assets you inherit: capital gains tax may apply if you dispose of an asset inherited from a deceased estate. income tax applies as usual to any dividends or rental income from shares or property you inherited.
You must tell us about any lump sum you get, even if you think it's exempt from the income test. You also need to tell us about any changes to your assets. If you don't tell us, we may overpay you.
Centrelink has very wide powers to thoroughly investigate deposits that have been made into your account. For example, it has the power to obtain your information from other government agencies as well as accessing information from banks, building societies and credit union accounts.
Centrelink do not normally tell you if they are investigating you. The initial phases of their investigation will be discreetly conducted by cross checking your financial information from your bank, ATO and even employer.
You'll need to notify HMRC that you've received inheritance money, even if no tax is due. If it is, you'll be expected to pay the tax within six months of the death of your loved one. This will normally be taken out of the deceased's estate, and the executor will usually take care of it.
If you do report regularly, you must tell us on or before your reporting date, of the period when the gift happens. If you don't, we may overpay you. You can report gifts, sales or transfers in any of the following ways: using your Centrelink online account through myGov.
The amount of savings your household has will affect the money you receive from means tested benefits. This means a lump sum of money, for example from an inheritance, can affect the amount of means tested benefits that you are entitled to.
In addition to funds received that are held in a financial investment, the value of insurance or compensation payments that have been applied to build, repair or renovate the building or plant can be exempt from the assets test.
There are two types of benefits: means-tested benefits and non means-tested benefits. If you inherit a property, it is highly likely that it will affect any means-tested benefits you receive. Any non means-tested benefits will not be affected if you inherit a property.
The inheritance itself will not affect your pension, but what you do with that money will have an impact. If you place it in the bank, it will be treated as an asset and also have deeming applied to be considered as income. If you purchase an asset it will also be included in the assets test.

Annual Gift Tax Limits
The annual gift tax exclusion of $16,000 for 2022 is the amount of money that you can give as a gift to one person, in any given year, without having to pay any gift tax. You never have to pay taxes on gifts that are equal to or less than the annual exclusion limit.
Filing Form 709: First, the IRS primarily finds out about gifts if you report them using Form 709. As a requirement, gifts exceeding $15,000 must be reported on this form.
There are varying sizes of inheritances, but a general rule of thumb is $100,000 or more is considered a large inheritance. Receiving such a substantial sum of money can potentially feel intimidating, particularly if you've never previously had to manage that kind of money.

For 2022, the federal estate exemption is $12.06 million, and it will increase to $12.92 million in 2023. Estates smaller than this amount are not subject to federal taxes, though individual states have their own rules. Internal Revenue Service.
If Centrelink suspect that you are claiming more social security benefits than you are entitled to they will investigate your situation. Centrelink may believe that you have not been honest with them because of routine data matching checks or due to getting a tip-off from a member of the public.
If you have defrauded Centrelink, you may be charged under section 134.2 – obtaining a financial advantage by deception. If you are found guilty, the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment. You may instead, or also, receive a fine between $10,000 and $100,000 and be made to repay the benefit to Centrelink.
You can request a Statement of Debt for any 5 year period going back to 1998. You can make more than one request.
