It's been shown that dogs have uncanny abilities to detect medical issues, such as cancer, oncoming episodes of medical crisis (such as seizures), or anxiety. There is anecdotal evidence that dogs can also sense death, but how they process and perceive this information is still being debated and researched.
However, due to their acute senses, dogs are able to pick up on the sounds and smells that are associated with oncoming death. Some dogs make a career out of comforting those at their deathbeds and have even been thought to predict death - a theory that dates back to ancient Egyptian times.
The last few days before your dog passes you may notice: extreme weight loss, a distant look in their eyes, a lack of interest in anything, restlessness or unusual stillness, a change in the way that your dog smells, and a changed temperament.

Some dogs are more sensitive to sudden noises and movements which also makes them seem more alert, but aside from that, dogs generally have a sixth sense that lets them know about danger.
write a goodbye letter and bury it with them. write a poem or short story talking about your life with them. share your loss with others who have been through it. become a volunteer and help others through their pet loss.
Quality of life is the key issue. If your dog is unable to function in a way that assures you that he is still enjoying a good quality of life, then it's time to seriously consider releasing him from his body.
Dogs Are Reading Us
They sense our moods, follow our pointing gestures, and read us for information about what's going to happen next. That means they stare at us a lot to gain knowledge about their environment. Essentially, they are waiting for us to do something that will impact them.
Relaxing occurs naturally after a dog passes away, but contraction does not. This means that although the eyelids may droop, they often do not close completely, as your dog no longer orders those muscles to contract.
The human body apparently gives off a distinct odor as a result of specific chemicals being released in to the blood stream before or perhaps during a seizure or heart attack. Your dog can smell and associate this change of you normal smell and understand you are in impending danger.
