Without a fixed address, someone experiencing homelessness is not able to access financial support through Centrelink. The irony is that they need the Centrelink payments to pay for a PO Box but cannot get the payments until they have that PO Box.
You can access Centrelink, Medicare and child support without an address, but you'll still need somewhere for them to send your mail.
Mission Australia manages community housing across Australia and can help you look for a home. The Red Cross can help you look for suitable shelter. They also give meals to people with low incomes or housing problems.
Across Australia, SHS agencies provide services aimed at prevention and early intervention, crisis and post crisis assistance to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The agencies receive government funding to deliver accommodation-related and personal services.
Contact social service organizations: Social service agencies might be able to assist with food, housing, and other basic needs. Use online sources: There are numerous online resources, including details on local shelters and assistance services.
Which human rights are we talking about? Human rights are about everyone, and they are very important for people who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless. We all have the right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, clothing and housing.
There are no internationally agreed upon definitions of homelessness, making it difficult to compare levels of homelessness across countries. A majority of people experiencing homelessness long-term in Australia are found in the large cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Boarding Houses: Affordable boarding houses are available to those who do not have their own homes. Unfortunately, these dwellings are usually not safe and secure with many people sharing facilities. Other temporary lodgings: Some homeless people find themselves living in cheap motels and caravan parks.
In Australia, homelessness can affect people of all ages, men, women, and children from different circumstances. Most of us do not see the full impact it can have in our communities.
Visiting us. For Centrelink services, you can call ahead to book an appointment at a service centre. We can help veterans and their families at our service centres.
What we mean is – while Centrelink don't have the power to spot check your personal bank account, they do conduct cross checks with other Government agencies and use data-matching to check that we're all doing the right thing. These processes help them identify and investigate any cases of possible welfare fraud.
Centrelink has very wide powers to thoroughly investigate deposits that have been made into your account. For example, it has the power to obtain your information from other government agencies as well as accessing information from banks, building societies and credit union accounts.
Of the 122,494 people experiencing homelessness in 2021: 25,504 (20.8%) were aged from 25 to 34 years. 17,646 (14.4%) were aged under 12 years. 17,085 (13.9%) were aged from 35 to 44 years.
Causes of homelessness
Domestic violence is the single biggest cause of homelessness in Australia. What this means is that homelessness is a product of many other human rights abuses.
Whether it is outside under a bridge, in a tent out in the woods, or on a park bench, homeless people are sleeping anywhere they can find.

The Salvation Army can help find you a place to sleep, eat, and shower, as well as provide access to support services. Their options include: emergency and crisis accommodation. temporary or transitional accommodation or lodgings.
The Reconnect Program is a community-based early intervention and prevention program for young people aged 12 to 18 years (or 12 to 21 years in the case of newly arrived youth) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and their families.
Short Supply of Shelter Beds
Individuals experiencing homelessness often choose not to wait in line for a shelter bed. This is common in places with insufficient beds as there are high chances of not getting one.
Homelessness can be caused by:
A shortage of affordable housing. Physical and/or mental health issues. Unemployment or job loss. Drug and alcohol abuse and addiction.
Homelessness is on the rise in Australia. Some 116,400 Australians are without a home — the highest number since the census began estimating the prevalence of homelessness.
On 11 August 2017, the NSW government passed laws granting police sweeping new powers to move on people occupying designated public reserves. The legislation was rushed through parliament, without proper scrutiny or consultation, to enable the state government to immediately dismantle Martin Place's “tent city”.
