Leaving Coconut oil for a dry scalp overnight is effective because it restores moisture content to the scalp. If your hair feels dull and dry, use coconut oil once a week as a hair mask before washing your hair, and feel your hair become moisturised.
Avoid leaving oil in overnight
The longer, the better — that may be true for some hair treatments but not for hair oiling as the oil can block your hair follicles. Unless an ayurvedic doctor or expert has asked you to leave a medicated oil overnight, wash out the oil within 3-4 hours.
Smooth coconut oil onto hair and comb it through dry hair. Leave it on for at 15 to 30 minutes to let it absorb. Thoroughly wash hair with a great shampoo (you may need to shampoo twice to remove all of the oil) and conditioning as usual.
You can leave coconut oil on your hair for a minimum of 30 minutes. For maximum benefits, you may leave it overnight. Washing it off too early may not let the hair and scalp soak its benefits, and keeping it on for days may attract dirt and cause buildup and hair fall.
Coconut oil can offer your hair a more intense treatment the longer it is left in (within reason – don't go leaving coconut oil in your hair for days!) especially if you're looking to hydrate your hair. You see, coconut oil contains what are known as medium chain fatty acids as well as plenty of amino acids.
Does coconut oil have any negative effects on hair? Coconut oil is generally considered safe to apply to your skin and hair ( 13 ). However, using too much could cause a buildup of oil on your hair and scalp. This could make your hair greasy and dull, especially if you have very fine hair.
Coconut Oil Can Cause Hair Breakage
The more you use it, the drier and brittle your hair becomes, leading to more breakage. Coconut oil should never be used on dry, coarse, or brittle hair because these hair types are particularly vulnerable to breakage from coconut oil use.
For best results, some haircare experts suggest using coconut oil about two to three times a week.
Use coconut oil in wet hair
We recommend that you use the hair oil in wet hair as a finishing, nourishing treatment after washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner. By applying the coconut oil to wet hair, the hair gets an extra moisture boost and is left soft and shiny all day.
For a quick deep-conditioning hair treatment, apply your coconut oil before shampooing and conditioning your hair like you normally would. Simply leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash your hair like normal. Or, for an extra-hydrating hair mask, leave your coconut oil hair treatment on overnight.
1. Use It As a Protective “Pre-'Poo” Here's a trick that's particularly helpful for folks with dry or curly hair: Avoiding the scalp, coat dry hair with a glob of coconut oil an hour or so before hitting the shower. The oil protects each strand from drying out while you shampoo.
Coconut oil is a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.
Deep condition hair overnight as a daily moisturizer
This is one of our easiest tips on how to moisturize dry hair – apply a leave-in conditioner or hydrating hair oil, wrap hair in a silk scarf or shower cap, and get your beauty sleep. In the morning you'll wake up with hydrated, healthy-looking locks.
“Hair loss is directly linked to the pH level of your scalp,” says Anker, “So if your hair is dry or overly oily, you'll experience more hair loss.” Adding extra oil to the scalp also messes with the natural oil/water balance on the scalp. “If you put extra oil on it your body will stop producing natural oil.”
Hair breakage can be reduced, therefore meaning the hair can grow longer without breaking. If your hair is thinning or if your hair has become fine, coconut oil has helped people to reduce the speed of hair loss; it has been known to affect the hair shaft to have a positive effect on the loss of protein.
Preventing frizz
Coconut oil stops the hair from absorbing water, especially in humid climates, which can help prevent frizz. Damaged hair tends to look frizzy, even in dry weather. As coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft, it can also help smoothen damaged, uneven hair.
Typically, those with fine to medium shiny hair will see good results from coconut oil and notice stronger, shinier hair with more volume. Those with coarse or dry hair may not struggle with low protein at all and coconut oil may lead to more brittle hair and hair loss.
"The reason some people experience dryness with coconut oil — especially when using it alone as a treatment — is that it can penetrate the hair cuticle, taking up space within the strands," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson.
You can use fenugreek oil for obtaining long and silky hair. You can boil a few seeds of fenugreek in coconut oil and apply them to hair and scalp. When the oil cools down, you can use this oil for massaging your head. Leave this oil overnight in your hair and then wash it off the next day to get silky hair.
For deep conditioning, all that's needed are two tablespoons of coconut oil. After gently heating the coconut oil (if needed), apply it to damp or dry hair as is. Then, wrap the hair in a towel or shower cap and wear it overnight. (We recommend keeping the mask on for at least seven hours.)
The friction caused by tossing and turning on a pillow for eight hours a night can be one reason for frizziness in the morning. Swap cotton for a silk pillowcase, to reduce friction. These can be better for your facial skin, too.
One of the easiest ways to get rid of coconut oil is to use dry shampoo. Dry shampoo comes in handy to absorb excess oils and give your strands a refreshed and balanced feel. Apply the dry shampoo to your hair, making sure to focus on your roots and apply lightly through the rest of your hair.
Oils like castor, peppermint, onion, coconut, jojoba, argan, amla, olive, grapeseed, rosemary, and tea tree are often recommended for hair growth. They help boost blood circulation and strengthen hair.
