To clean hardened crust from around your nose, gently pat the area with a moist napkin to soften the dried fluid. Warm water can be used as it's more comfortable than cold water. Within four to six weeks of the surgery, most of the swelling will be gone. At this point, you can resume washing your face regularly.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Rule #2: Don't Pick at Scabs
Picking can reopen wounds within the nose, cause bleeding and even result in infection of the surgical area. So, refrain from touching the inside of your nose no matter how itchy or annoying the scabby area feels.
You may gently clean dried blood from the inside of the nose with a Q-tip and dilute hydrogen peroxide. Refrain from blowing your nose or sneezing if possible for 2 weeks. Use saline spray or a bulb syringe for comfort and to help clear drainage.
Rhinoplasty patients must know the risks of blowing or picking the nose after getting their rhinoplasty, especially around the first 2 weeks after the procedure. Blowing or picking the nose could prolong the healing process, elevate the swelling, and increase the risk of bleeding.
No nose picking and/or nose blowing for 14 days after surgery. Use nasal saline sprays (2-3 sprays in each nostril) at least three times daily to moisturize your nose for the first 2 weeks after surgery.
Avoid touching until your surgeon certifies that the goal of Rhinoplasty has been achieved and that the nasal region has fully recovered. Any unwanted touch, push, or poking can misalign the cartilage or bone and even undo the positive results.
There is always some nasal discharge after rhinoplasty or septoplasty for the first few days. This is nasal phlegm from the nose being stimulated by the surgery and by the stents inside the nose.
To avoid undue pressure on your nose – which can damage the healing tissues, delay the recovery process, and compromise your final results – cleaning the nose should be performed gently using a saline rinse.
Most often the intranasal packing is absorbable, however on occasion non-absorbable packing is required for your surgery. Do not disturb this packing. Occasionally, a black or white string will be seen coming out of one or both sides of the nose. This is attached to the packing and should neither be cut nor pulled.
Rhinotillexomania is the medical term for chronic nose-picking. In chronic or compulsive nose-picking, scab formation may prompt the person to blow out or pick the scab, causing more bleeding, scabbing, and an ongoing cycle that does not allow the nose to heal.
You should not “pick” at your scab or scrub at your scab during your shower. Removing the dry scab intentionally can increase scarring and slow healing. This is true even if the scab is forming around your stitches and making them appear discolored or dirty.
After about two to three weeks, most patients will find that their bruising has completely resolved. Those with mild bruising may see complete fading of their bruises sooner than two weeks, while those with more extensive bruising may take a little longer to see complete recovery from their bruises.
Once the bandage has been removed, gentle and regular cleansing with a simple toner should help. But ensure that you don't rub, massage or wipe too hard. Some exfoliators are fine to use but avoid aggressive exfoliators, as the nasal skin can be extremely sensitive in the early stages following surgery.
Three weeks post-rhinoplasty, about 70 percent of swelling is gone. This is the time when a patient starts to recognize the changes and begins to appreciate the new shape of his or her nose. It's ok, actually quite normal, to feel a little self conscious at this time.
Incision lines should be cleaned 1 to 2 times per day with Hydrogen Peroxide and a Q-tip to remove any crusting that may build up. Vaseline (a thin layer) should always be a kept on the incision line to help the skin heal. Apply Vaseline at least 2-3 times per day or more to keep the incision line moist.
The packing is gradually absorbed by your body within a few weeks. Due to swelling, dry blood, mucus, temporary packing, and crusting in your nose, you may have symptoms like an upper respiratory infection, and – yes - an unpleasant odor.
They should be removed right away. The moist tissue in the nose can cause the battery to release strong chemicals (alkali) quickly, often in less than 1 hour. This can cause serious damage to the sensitive mucous membranes that line the nose.
This is due to a variety of factors that can occur during the healing process. During a nose job, the surgeon makes incisions inside and outside of the nose and then adjusts the cartilage and bone structures in order to reshape it. These incisions increase the risk of infection, which can lead to an unpleasant odor.
After a rhinoplasty procedure, don't be surprised if your smile is temporarily affected by post-operative swelling. The effect is temporary and your smile will return to normal after the initial swelling has dissipated. This may take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
Also, during rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes the nostrils smaller if needed and the nostrils are large.. Now, if you insert a finger in your nose after rhinoplasty, it will cause the nostrils to become large and deformed again, and you will not get the desired result from your rhinoplasty..
How long should I wait after nasal surgery to kiss my partner? – I tell patients to wait 6 weeks before returning to contact sports, so if you consider kissing a contact sport, then 6 weeks. If not, then you can kiss your partner as soon as you are able to do so painlessly.
