Please discuss this with your Endoscopist prior to the procedure. DO NOT eat or drink 6 hours prior to your procedure. Stop antacids like Mylanta and Gaviscon for 24 hours prior to your procedure. You may continue taking Nexium or similar medications.
Please stop all stomach treatments for at least 2 weeks before your test except: Antacids, Gaviscon, Rennies, Maalox, Aludorox, Andrews and Settlers, which are permitted. However, if your test is for a repeat gastroscopy, please continue to take your stomach treatment.
Day of endoscopy
Nothing to eat or drink at least 8 hours before the procedure. Medication can be taken 4 hours before examination with little sips of water. DO NOT TAKE ANY ANTACIDS OR CARAFATE BEFORE THE PROCEDURE or any of the medications mentioned. Wear loose comfortable clothing.
You have been told not to stop taking this medication by your doctor. You have an ulcer and we are checking if it has healed. If none of these apply, please stop this medication 2 weeks before your appointment to prevent it affecting the results of your test. Taking Gaviscon or Rennies will not affect the test.
Seven to ten days before your procedure:
Do not take aspirin or aspirin products (such as Alka-Seltzer, Ibuprofen, Nuprin, Advil, Aleve, or Motrin). You may take Tylenol for pain or headache. Do not take iron supplements.
Infusion of high-dose omeprazole before endoscopy accelerated the resolution of signs of bleeding in ulcers and reduced the need for endoscopic therapy.
You should not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before the procedure. Your doctor may advise you to begin your fast at midnight regardless of the time your endoscopy is scheduled to begin.
Alginates provide long-lasting relief for up to 4 hours, even longer than antacids. Creating a protective barrier on top of the contents of your stomach, to stop stomach acid escaping into your food pipe causing discomfort.
Some products that may interact with this drug include: digoxin, certain phosphate binders (such as calcium acetate), phosphate supplements (such as potassium phosphate), sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Calcium carbonate can decrease the absorption of other drugs.
The endoscope helps your provider see inside your esophagus and stomach. Test results may not show problems when reflux is present, but an endoscopy may detect inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) or other complications.
Your throat will be numbed with a spray before the doctor gently passes the tube through your mouth into your stomach. You will be able to breathe normally and burp if needed during the test.
During the Endoscopy
Next, a mouth guard will be placed in your mouth so that the endoscope will not damage your teeth. At this point, if you are receiving sedation, you will start to be sleepy and will most likely remain asleep throughout the procedure, which generally takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
The time for 50% of the Gaviscon to empty from the stomach was 0.36 +/- 0.13 h, 3.10 +/- 0.31 h and 0.68 +/- 0.04 h (s.e.m.), respectively. The preparation was found to empty rapidly from the fasted stomach and could not be floated on a meal consumed subsequently.
Gaviscon Advance; especially in liquid form coats the oesophagus and sits on top of the stomach contents. It can help to bind Pepsin and stop acid irritation and tends to be helpful in LPR. How soon after taking Gaviscon® can I eat or drink again? Since Gaviscon® works quickly, you can eat or drink again as soon as your symptoms subside. However, keep in mind that eating or drinking will break the foam barrier, and likely reduce the benefits.

Tolerance and safety were good and comparable in both groups. Conclusion Gaviscon® was non-inferior to omeprazole in achieving a 24-h heartburn-free period in moderate episodic heartburn, and is a relevant effective alternative treatment in moderate GERD in primary care.
Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or headache may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. The magnesium in this product can cause diarrhea. Using an antacid that contains only aluminum along with this product can help control diarrhea.
Gaviscon Regular Strength liquid: Take 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 milliliter spoonfuls) four times daily. Follow with a glass of water.
Chew 2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime as needed (up to 4x a day), or as directed by a doctor. For best results follow by a half glass of water or other liquid.
The procedure may be uncomfortable, but it shouldn't be painful. You'll receive an intravenous sedative or another form of anesthesia. Someone should drive you home after the procedure. You lie on your left side during the procedure, which takes about 30 minutes.
