Medications for Tinnitus
For some, treatment with low doses of anti-anxiety drugs -- such as Valium or antidepressants such as Elavil -- help reduce tinnitus. The use of a steroid placed into the middle ear along with an anti-anxiety medicine called alprazolam has been shown to be effective for some people.
Tinnitus is not only associated with hearing loss, but as expected with sleep disturbance as well. The relationship may even be cyclical— Up to 71 percent of tinnitus patients report sleep problems, and sleep deprivation may be a cause of chronic tinnitus.
Sound Therapy
If one has something in their environment that sounds like their tinnitus, the brain has a source to attribute to the sound and is able to become more relaxed. There are many ways to implement sound therapy. Common at-home methods can include turning a fan on, listening to music or the tv.
There may not be a cure, but lasting relief is entirely possible. Thanks to a mental process called habituation, you can get to a place where your tinnitus stops bothering you entirely, where your brain just stops paying attention to it and it fades from your awareness.
Research shows that stress can be a trigger for tinnitus, or make it worse. And some people, though not all, find that tinnitus makes them feel stressed and anxious. So you may find yourself in a cycle: stress makes your tinnitus worse, which in turn makes you feel more stressed or anxious.
Tinnitus can't be cured. But tinnitus usually doesn't continue forever. There will be a large number of factors that will establish how long your tinnitus will stick around, including the primary cause of your tinnitus and your general hearing health.
Will my tinnitus ever go away? The greatest majority of new tinnitus cases will resolve within 6-12 months of onset. If your tinnitus is more longstanding, it is likely that you will hear it less over time, even if it persists beyond this period.
Traffic, loud music, construction – all of these can worsen tinnitus. Be sure to wear earplugs or another type of ear protection in order to prevent noise from making your tinnitus worse. Many medications are ototoxic, meaning they cause temporary (or, in some cases, permanent) damage to your hearing.

A spike can last for a few minutes, hours or even days or weeks at a time. While these spikes can be challenging to deal with, they are not a sign that your tinnitus is getting worse. They are simply part of how your brain tries to tune out the tinnitus, which is known as the habituation process.
