Since we know that the peak sensitivity of a snake's hearing is in the 200 to 300 Hz range and the average human voice is at about 250 Hz, we can determine that a pet snake can, in fact, hear you talking to them.
Snakes are able to recognise and distinguish between humans and may recognise the scent of their owner as familiar or positive with time. However, snakes are unable to view humans as companions so cannot form a bond with their owner like other pets can.
So instead of responding to sound pressure, snakes respond to vibrations transmitted directly from the air to the skeleton. Having shown that snakes are sensitive to sound-induced vibrations rather than sound pressure, the team is keen to investigate the hearing of other earless animals.
Snakes do not have an external ear, but they do have all the parts of the inner ear that we do. Their stapes—called a “columella”—is slightly different from ours in that it connects to the jawbone, enabling them to sense vibrations. However, they can only hear a portion of the sounds we hear.
Most people don't realize snakes don't have ears which makes them deaf. It doesn't matter what kind of noise you make to scare the snake away, it won't hear you either way.
Heat Receptors
Snakes detect both the visible light, and the infrared radiation. Certain snakes have special heat sensitive pit organs. Pit vipers and other snakes have heat-sensitive, infra-red-detecting facial pits that allow them to detect prey several meters away.
Unfortunately, snakes never evolved the parts of the brain responsible for complex emotions and behaviors like love and showing affection.
Snakes have been known to show excitement and curiosity, too. “At the zoo,” says Dr. Denish, “we see snakes that are interested in new forms of enrichment like bedding, housing, or a new scent.” Some reptiles will also show pleasure at human contact.
Some snakes seem to enjoy a light massage down the length of their body, a head stroke, belly rub, or even a chin scratch, while others do not. Every snake has a different personality and may enjoy something different but being gentle and respecting your snake's boundaries are important.
Snakes and other reptiles are not social animals. They do not form communities, have friends, or even nurture their own young. Unlike mammals that can demonstrate complete emotions like love, joy, or even jealousy, snakes do not demonstrate deep feelings like these.
Use Natural Predators
Foxes and raccoons are common predators of snakes. Guinea hens, turkeys, pigs, and cats will also help keep snakes away. If foxes are indigenous to your area, fox urine is a very good natural repellent for snakes when spread around your property.
Unlike dogs, cats, rats and birds, snakes simply do not have the right type of intelligence to recognize one specific human from another. However, snakes can be conditioned into tolerating human contact, which may create the illusion of recognition and differentiation.
“A snake that is feeling aggressive may warn you with a hiss,” states Dr. Hoppes. “This can occur when you are forcing your attention on the snake, and if you persist, they may strike out. Typically snakes hiss or coil when they are feeling hostile, but most pet snakes are not aggressive animals unless threatened.”
No. The charm has nothing to do with the music and everything to do with the charmer waving a pungi, a reed instrument carved out of a gourd, in the snake's face. Snakes don't have external ears and can perceive little more than low-frequency rumbles.
Because snakes don't hear sound vibrations in the air very well, clapping is not an effective way to scare them away. Instead of clapping, try stomping your feet on the ground to produce vibrations that the snake will feel. This will be more effective than clapping.
Snakes can recognize themselves
Self-recognition has long been considered an ability unique to humans and a handful of species like dolphins, chimpanzees, and elephants.
Loud noises that seem insignificant to you can stress pet snakes -- paving the primrose path to big trouble. Because it's a given that the only way to properly listen to any strong bass music such as rock and roll and hip hop is wide open, consider using headphones when you're hanging out and digging on rowdy tunes.
The truth is that snakes actually lack the ability to hear and thus do not hear the music. Instead they respond to the vibrations and movements of the naskar. The snakes also follow the swaying movements of the snake charmer as he plays the naskar.
So a snake probably can't hear, say, most music3 or human speech directly, but it can hear the sound of its own body vibrating in response to those sounds. So, instead of being deaf, snakes essentially have two auditory systems that are at least peripherally distinct.
Snakes have infamously poor eyesight, which is why they resort to sticking out their tongues all the time to get a sense of their surroundings. But the creatures may have a way to improve their vision in a pinch.
What does it mean when your snake keeps staring at you? Your snake might seem to stare if it's asleep, hungry, or having the stargazing syndrome. All these will depend on your snake's breed and its behavioral responses. Once you understand your pet, you will be able to tell what it wants to communicate by a stare.
Snakes won't be receptive to your affection—they're wary animals who don't like being held, touched, petted, or passed around. It's stressful for them and puts them at risk of illness and injury, and because they don't whine or yelp, you may not realize that they're hurt. (See reason number 7.)
The study found snakes to be dichromatic, meaning they can see two primary colours, blue and green. In addition to their colour vision, many snakes have developed a sensitivity to UV light, allowing them to see in low light conditions. This adaptation was found in the majority of snakes analysed in the study.
Unfortunately, when it comes to snakes and whether they can survive being cut in half, the answer is no. When a snake is cut in half, both halves will die due to loss of blood and nerve function.
