Gatorade, Juice (non-acidic), and Milk are also good options. Immediately following surgery we recommend cool soft foods: Ice-cream, Jello, Pudding, Applesauce, Yogurt, Protein shakes or Milkshakes (no straws!).
Avoid milk products (shakes and yogurt) for the first day if you had sedation. Milk products can cause nausea following sedation. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but do not drink through a straw for at least 5-7 days.
So, why no dairy? Dairy causes an inflammatory response in the oral tissues and this is not desirable after you have had dental implant surgery. Dairy has also been known to trigger nausea and vomiting.
The best drink to have after surgery is cold water. This is best for the oral health after the removal of your wisdom teeth.
Chocolate milk, or any other flavor of milk, is acceptable after wisdom teeth removal. Also, chilled milk is the best option as the cold can help reduce gum swelling and alleviate pain.
Both alcohol and carbonated beverages can damage the clot in your extraction site and cause complications, so avoid drinking them for at least four days after your extraction.
Within the first 24 hours after tooth removal surgery, you should avoid consuming anything that involves chewing. Try to limit yourself to liquids exclusively. If they don't fill you up and you want to consume solid food, go for soft meals that don't need much chewing, like pudding or oatmeal.
Drinking fluids following oral surgery will also speed up the healing process and help to prevent conditions like dry socket. However, when drinking liquids, do so by sipping on a cup or bottle. Do not use a straw, as the suction could dislodge any dressings on the wound.
After your procedure, focus on drinking lots of water to facilitate healing and stay hydrated. Beverages like Gatorade, Powerade, and Pedialyte can also be great options to help you stay hydrated and heal up quickly.
Assuming your healing and recovery process is going swimmingly, you'll want to wait at least 5 days to reintroduce coffee back into your diet, says the University of Utah.
It is further argued that clotting may be inhibited by consumption of dairy products, with a risk of resulting dry socket and dolor post extractionem. Fibrinolytic plasminogen, which is also been found in milk, is believed to be responsible for the inhibition of clotting.
This may lead to a condition called dry socket, which can cause considerable pain and an unpleasant taste in your mouth. To reduce your risk of developing dry socket, stay away from coffee for a few days after getting your tooth removed.
Don't drink with a straw, suck on candy or ice pops, slurp soups or other liquids, rinse your mouth vigorously, or smoke for 24 hours. These things create suction in the mouth. This may dislodge the blood clot. Don't drink alcohol or use mouthwash containing alcohol for 24 hours.
Generally, it's best to avoid alcohol after an extraction for as long as your dentist suggests. That's usually at least 72 hours. Just to be on the safe side, though, you may want to wait seven to 10 days for the blood clot to fully form and the extraction site to finish healing. During that time, drink water instead.

Sleeping Must Be Done Elevated
Following any type of oral surgery, including a tooth extraction, you should sleep elevated for the first 2-3 nights. This allows your body to drain more of the fluid away from the extraction site.
Always sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights after the wisdom tooth extraction surgery. If you struggle to put yourself in that position, get support from a few pillows. Keeping your head elevated at a 45-deg angle while sleeping ensures faster recovery. It also minimizes swelling in the surgical area.
After a tooth extraction, eat only soft or liquid form foods for at least the first 24 hours following the surgery. Do not vigorously chew anything. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that can further traumatize the extraction site and cause further bleeding. Do not consume hot liquids as they will dissolve the blood clot.
As a best practice, except for taking medication you should delay drinking fluids for 1 hour following your extraction procedure. Especially following more involved extractions (difficult procedures, the removal of multiple teeth), drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day makes a good idea.
When can I have something to eat? About an hour after surgery, you may remove the gauze sponges that have been placed in your mouth and have something to eat. Be sure to eat foods that are soft for the first 24 hours after surgery. Avoid hot foods and drinks for several hours after surgery.
Vigorous mouth rinsing or chewing in the areas of the tooth extraction should be avoided. This may cause increased bleeding or the blood clot to dislodge. A liquid or soft diet is recommended for the first 24 hours after tooth extraction. Avoid sucking through straws and eating hard or crunchy foods and spicy foods.
Avoid any food that is sharp, scratchy or sticky (e.g. toffee, chewing gum). We advise sticking to a soft diet for the first 48 hours following your surgery.
