Absolutely! As a permanent disability, the NDIS provides funding for persons with ASD. In fact, autism spectrum disorder is the largest primary disability category for the NDIS. However, there are some conditions and not all individuals with autism spectrum disorder will be approved for NDIS funding.
From the age of 16, you or your child may be eligible for the Disability Support Pension. If eligible, the Disability Support Pension provides financial help if autism prevents a person from working.

Receiving Social Security Disability for Autism. There are two programs that people with autism can use to receive Social Security disability benefits: the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.
Level 1 is the mildest, or “highest functioning” form of autism, which includes those who would have previously been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Individuals with ASD level 1 may have difficulty understanding social cues and may struggle to form and maintain personal relationships.
Long-term memory skills and higher intelligence
Even so, children with HFA showed good verbal working memory, associative learning ability, and recognition memory. Autistic people are highly polarised, with average to above-average intelligence compared to the general public.
A diagnosis can also help autistic adults to access accommodations such as flexible work schedules or assistive technology. This can also lead to finding neurodivergent-affirming groups, which results in improved social support and a greater sense of belonging.
Diagnosis may also bring with it better financial and practical support. For some this may mean access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Others may qualify for specialised mental health services or supports in the workplace or while studying at university or TAFE.

An ADOS-2 Assessment and report costs $600 – $800 + GST. A Full assessment which includes, screening, cognitive assessment, ADOS-2, Developmental interview and observational assessment costs $1100 + GST. An assessment may also require a speech pathologist and /or paediatrician report.
People diagnosed with Level 2 ASD require moderate levels of support. This means that they may only be capable of limited social interactions, have limited interests, and frequently perform limited or repetitive behaviours. Individuals with Level 2 ASD diagnosis will automatically qualify to be an NDIS participant.
That means that an individual can have a combination of levels. With a Level 2 or Level 3 Autism diagnosis, the NDIS provides automatic access with no more assessments required. However, with a Level 1 diagnosis, this is not the case, and additional evidence is required.
These children are often notably awkward, and they find nonverbal interaction especially complicated, specifically in situations involving eye contact, sensory sensitivity, spatial awareness, and interpersonal communications.
Level 1: $4,000 – $8,000. Level 2: $8001 – $12,000. Level 3: $12,001 – $30,000. Level 4: $30,001 – $35,000.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a monthly government payment through Social Security that was created to support people who are disabled. To help support them financially, individuals with autism may be eligible to receive SSI.

Autism is one of the hundreds of conditions listed in the Blue Book. Autism is listed in Section 12.10 for adults and 112.10 for children. To meet the listing for either a child or an adult, medical evidence must show: Pronounced difficulty in interacting socially, especially in responding or reciprocating.
One of the most effective ways to treat level 1 autism is through utilizing the Theory of Mind. Theory of Mind and adaptive skills-based treatment that targets executive function, emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, social communication skills, and anxiety reduction.
Level 1: The person may be able to live a relatively independent life with minimal support. Level 2: Substantial support is necessary to help the person communicate and deal with change.
