With rapid, expert treatment, patients can often recover fully. An unruptured brain aneurysm may cause zero symptoms. People can live with them for years before detection.
Brain aneurysms can occur in anyone and at any age. They are most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and are more common in women than in men. People with certain inherited disorders are also at higher risk.
Brain aneurysms are common. But most brain aneurysms aren't serious, especially if they're small. Most brain aneurysms don't rupture. They usually don't cause symptoms or cause health problems.
Can people live a long time with a brain aneurysm? Absolutely. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms at all. Some people live for years without knowing they have a brain aneurysm.

Not all brain aneurysms that are discovered by chance will rupture (tear). But various factors increase the risk of a rupture, causing bleeding in the brain. When a brain aneurysm is diagnosed, doctors try to determine the risk of complications.
Strong emotions, such as being upset or angry, can raise blood pressure and can subsequently cause aneurysms to rupture.
Small, unruptured aneurysms, particularly in the front of the brain, are sometimes safely left alone, particularly in older patients and those without a family history of aneurysm rupture or other risk factors such as uncontrolled high blood pressure.

There are three types of aneurysms: abdominal aortic, thoracic aortic, and cerebral.
A brain aneurysm is usually diagnosed using angiography. Angiography is a type of X-ray used to check blood vessels. This involves inserting a needle, usually in the groin, through which a narrow tube called a catheter can be guided into one of your blood vessels.
Brain aneurysms often remain undetected for a long time. Many people who have brain aneurysms have no symptoms at all or only subtle symptoms that come and go, often dismissed as minor health issues. Prescreening options to detect brain aneurysms are limited and expensive. With the help of a research grant from the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, CEO Vincent Tutino, Ph. D., from Neurovascular Diagnostics is developing a low-cost blood test to detect unruptured brain aneurysms.
Brain aneurysms can be diagnosed by several imaging tests, though an unruptured brain aneurysm also may be found while undergoing brain imaging — such as MRI or CT scan — or a medical evaluation for another reason, such as an evaluation for headaches or other neurological symptoms.

An X-ray image of the head, processed by a computer into two- and three-dimensional images of the skull and brain. A CT scan can show the presence of an aneurysm and, if the aneurysm has burst, detects blood that has leaked into the brain.
