Using laxatives for weight loss is not safe or effective. If a person weighs less after taking laxatives, this is likely to be due to water loss. Water loss from laxative use is temporary and is not the same as losing body fat. Laxatives do not reduce body weight in the long term.
Unlike some laxatives that work to cause bowel contractions through direct nerve stimulation, MOVICOL® has a natural mode of action that works gently, in harmony with your body. acts locally in the colon to relieve constipation: The water retained by MOVICOL® softens the stool and bulks it up slightly.
The recommended dose of Movicol is 1 sachet a day. This can be increased to 2 or 3 sachets daily if necessary.
Are there any issues with long term use of MOVICOL? MOVICOL has been shown to be generally well tolerated in studies of up to 2 years duration. MOVICOL works in harmony by using water and the body's own processes to facilitate regular bowel movement.

The main active ingredient, macrogol 3350, goes straight to the bowel where, by retaining a set amount of water, it softens, expands and lubricates the stool to trigger peristalsis - in the same way as your normal bowel movement. MOVICOL® does not ferment either, which means less likelihood of gas or bloating/wind.
If your child does not drink enough water with it, the medicine will not work properly and your child may become dehydrated. Open the sachet and pour the contents into the water. Stir well until all the powder has dissolved and the mixture is clear or slightly hazy.
Laxatives do not reduce body fat or promote long-term weight loss. Even at high doses, stimulant laxatives, which encourage the movement of stool through the digestive tract, have only a “ modest effect ” on calorie absorption.
In fact, laxative use is an ineffective weight loss strategy. Some people do experience a temporary reduction in weight, but this is due to water loss. It is not the same as losing body fat. In the long run, you do not lose weight on laxatives.
Laxatives do not decrease body fat or aid in sustained weight loss. Even high doses of stimulant laxatives, which prompt the movement of stool through the digestive tract, only have a small effect on calorie absorption. Laxatives are not a solution for weight loss, they are intended to relieve constipation.
The active ingredient in MOVICOL (called macrogol 3350) is virtually unabsorbed by your body. How long will it take? Because of the gentle, natural mode of action, it can take a day or so after starting MOVICOL before you have your first bowel movement.
Don't worry – soft stools mean MOVICOL® has started to work. However, if the poo becomes very runny or diarrhoea (see Stool Type 7 on the chart overleaf), you should stop taking your MOVICOL® until the runny poo stops. Then start again at a reduced dose.
Very watery bowel movements are expected with this medication. Nausea, bloating, or feelings of fullness in the stomach/abdomen are very common. Stomach/abdominal cramps, vomiting, and anal irritation occur less often. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
MOVICOL® can be used by patients with renal insufficiency with no need to adjust the dose. The MOVICOL® range contains no sucrose (sugar). (Some varieties contain acesulfame potassium and/or sucralose, which are sweeteners not known to affect blood sugar).
How do you know when faecal impaction has cleared? There may be small lumps of poo of any shade of brown if the treatment has been successful. If your child is suffering from faecal impaction, you can give them some sweetcorn. If it appears in your child's poo within 24 hours, the impaction has cleared.
Dietary fibre is important as it helps to bulk and create soft stools that are easier to pass. Eating foods like fruits, vegetables and wholemeal bread can increase your daily intake of fibre.
Oral disimpaction
Movicol® Adult (13.125g of Macrogol 3350 per sachet) is equivalent to two Movicol Junior® sachets. Disimpaction usually takes 3-5 days but may take longer. If taking longer than 7 days, continue with day 7 dose until disimpaction occurs.
But if you take stimulant laxatives too often, you could become dependent on them to have a bowel movement at all—possibly because the bowel has stopped functioning normally.
