You can't find your AirPods if someone connects to them on their device. AirPods do not have Wifi access and only function through a Bluetooth connection. Thus, stolen AirPods will remain operational and untrackable. You can track your AirPods only if they connect to your device and sync to iCloud.
If you've lost or misplaced your AirPods, you might be able to find them if you use the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac that you're signed in to with the same Apple ID. With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also locate the charging case on the map if it's separated from your AirPods.
Note: If people use your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max with multiple Apple IDs, only the person who turned on the Find My network can see them in the Find My app. You may also get an alert if someone else's AirPods are traveling with you.
You can turn on the Find My network to see the location of some AirPods models even when they're out of range from your device. If the Find My network is turned off (or if your AirPods don't support the Find My network), the Find My app shows the last time and place they were connected. See Turn on the Find My network.
If your AirPods are near any of your Apple devices and connected to Bluetooth, you can play a sound to help you find them. With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also play a sound to help find your charging case. Open the Find My app. Select the Devices tab.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods]. If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.

When the device has been marked as lost, you see Activated under the Mark As Lost section. If the device isn't connected to a network when you mark it as lost, you see Pending until the device goes online again.
"Track" the AirPods? If they're lost, then the distance from you doesn't matter. If you mean how far they can be from the device used to supply their signal, then that is the standard Bluetooth distance which is about 40 feet (10 meters).
Using the Find My app: Once in pairing range: Tap AirPods > Remove This Device > Remove. Using iCloud: On iCloud.com: Find My > All Devices > AirPods > Remove from Account > Remove. You can't remove AirPods from someone else's Apple ID. Only the owner of the Apple ID can remove them.
You can switch from listening to one device with your AirPods to listening to another.
To find your AirPods, open the Find My app on your iPhone and select the Devices tab. Then swipe up and select your AirPods to see their last known location on a map. From here, you can also make them play a sound, get directions, use the new Find feature, and more.
Play a sound on your AirPods: If your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of any of your Apple devices, you can use the Find My app to play a sound on your AirPods. This can help you locate them if they are nearby, even if they are offline.
Additionally, there is no password protection on AirPods. While you can lock devices like your iPhone or Mac remotely with Lost Mode, you can't do the same with AirPods. That said, anyone can easily use stolen AirPods when they find them.
Open the Find My app on a connected Apple device or access the Find My page after signing in to the iCloud website. If your AirPods were connected to a device that uses Find My, you should see them listed with your other devices.
However, it only worked if your phone was within Bluetooth range of your AirPods. In other words, you had to be within 30 feet of the missing AirPods to locate them.
