By law, wild camping is not allowed in public spaces in Denmark. Fines can range from €5 to €500. This means on beaches, in the forest, at the roadside, on car parks, in nature reserves … in other words, wild camping is not allowed anywhere.
'Free tenting' zones
There are certain rules in place (for example, you can't use large tents or stick around for longer than a single night) but this is as close to wild camping as you'll get in Denmark. Of course, this means you'll need to bring all your own supplies with you, including drinking water.
You are allowed to sleep on the forest floor on a mat, in a sleeping bag, with a blanket or tarpaulin, a hammock or the like. Your tarpaulin must not work as a tent, and you are not allowed to damage trees or anything else. If you want to put up a tent you most use one of the many free campsites.
In Denmark, you are only allowed to stay on campsites with a motorhome or campervan. However, resting in the vehicle is permitted to regain the fitness to drive. However, you should pay attention to the signs on the pitches.
Camping in the Swedish wilderness
Take advantage of the freedom to roam and pitch up a tent for a night or two. Providing you don't disturb the landowner or cause damage to nature, 'Allemansrätten' is allowing you to freely choose your wild camping spot.
Not only does this disturb animals but it can also be very be dangerous. Especially in dry months as there is a danger of forest fires in Germany and the penalties exceed the fine charged for illegal wild camping by far.
Is wild camping allowed? Wild camping is generally tolerated in Switzerland above the treeline, with some restrictions. Wild camping is definitely not allowed in protected areas nature preserves, game rest zones, hunting grounds or Swiss National Park. Check the signs posted at the entrance to the nature area.
A red warning triangle is required in case of an accident or breakdown. Spiked tires may be used between November 1 and April 15. They must be on all 4 wheels. It is recommended that drivers equip their vehicle with a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit.
There is no legal right turn on red in Denmark, and even on green, the bicyclist has the right of way. You might choose to bike to work yourself, which is common in Denmark, even for executives.
Denmark has around 500 organised campsites, which isn't bad for a country with a total area of only 43,000km2! Even better, 408 of those are motorhome-friendly, with all the required facilities. These are spread out all over, so you're never more than approximately 20km from the nearest motorhome site.
You have to be 18 years old to be served alcohol at pubs & nightclubs. You have to show ID on request. (The legal age of purchasing alcohol in shops is 16.)
