Her wedding vows
Feminist icon, Princess Diana, famously refused to say that she would 'obey' Prince Charles in her wedding vows. The word is largely taken out of marriage vows now, but this was a huge deal in 1981. Kate Middleton removed the line as did Meghan Markle.
Not only did Diana break the strict rules concerning how royals interact with their kids, but she took her sons on outings that defied the expectations; she took the boys out for burgers and let them wear jeans. Diana also took them white-water rafting and let them ride their bikes.
In wearing the revenge dress, Diana not only acknowledged the pain she must have felt while Charles' infidelity played out in public, but also kept an eye toward reclaiming her power and her future. It was a moment of claiming agency for herself by way of a little black dress.
How it became the “revenge dress” “We call it the “revenge dress” [because] she wore it the same evening Prince Charles confessed to his adultery with Camilla,” said Kerry Taylor. Taylor's company auctioned off ten of the most recognizable Diana dresses back in 2013.
Long before Kim Kardashian and her Marilyn Monroe dress walked the red carpet, Princess Diana actually attended the Met Gala in a dress that also caused a little but of controversy. Why? Because it was deemed quite revealing for a royal at the time, even though it was after she was divorced from Prince Charles.
Emma Corrin wore a replica of Princess Diana's wedding gown, and it included many of the same details as the original. For her wedding to Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Princess Diana wore an ivory silk gown by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.
Camilla wore a similar revenge dress to Princess Diana's in 1995 - a year after the Princess' dress made headlines around the world - when she was photographed at London's Ritz Hotel wearing a shoulder-baring black dress similar to Diana's when she stepped out in public with Charles for the first time.
The Princess also chose a statement diamond, pearl and sapphire choker. The choker was actually made from a sapphire brooch gifted to Diana for her 1981 wedding by the Queen Mother. One year later at The Ritz, Camilla showed up in an almost identical dark dress with bare shoulders.
Camilla in 1995 was accused of copying Diana's LBD when she stepped out in public with Prince Charles for the first time. Express noted that Camilla was spotted at London's Ritz Hotel in a shoulder-baring black dress along with a nearly identical pearl necklace.
Alexandrine was known by the nickname of "Adini" within her family. It became clear shortly after Alexandrine's birth that she was affected with Down syndrome. Unlike other disabled royal children, Alexandrine was not hidden away. She appeared in official family photographs and at events.
The Queen thought Diana quite suitable for Charles. “She was very much a hit with the royal family—they really warmed to her,” Chernock says.
Slamming the show's decision to travel down this route, Richard said: "This is one of the most alarming scenes in The Crown because it's simply not true. "There's no evidence that the brakes of her car were ever tampered with, and what it's doing is trying to illustrate her fears at the time.
The Princess of Wales did claim that she did not want to destroy the monarchy as that “is my children's future”, but she claimed reform was needed to change the remote relationship between the Royal Family and the public.
But the queen wasn't wholly unsupportive. Just like Prince Philip, she did offer support to Diana in the wake of the split. “She [found] one perhaps rather unlikely ally at the palace in the queen,” Morton wrote, “whose understanding and helpful attitude did much to encourage Diana to soldier on.”
The blue, Saville Row suit he chose was actually a symbol of respect for his ex-wife rather than one of disrespect. The suit was Diana's favourite according to royal author Brian Hoey who, in 1997, said that she had even helped the Prince choose it.
Camilla may have been at Diana's wedding but she was not welcome at her funeral, which was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people around the world. Still, to many her absence echoed around the ancient hall. The Queen made it clear to Charles that he could not take his paramour to the service.
However, Princess Diana said that Camilla did not wear white, noting instead that the future queen consort donned a light gray for the occasion.
It was Diana! She said 'I just wanted to say thank you so much for the gown. I loved it. Prince Charles loved it.
The purchaser of the "revenge dress" was businessman Graeme Mackenzie from Scotland. Mackenzie kept the dress in a bank vault where it is expected to have remained with his family to this day. On occasion, it has been displayed for charity.
She famously purged her wardrobe just months before her death, auctioning off many of her defining garments – including the Stambolian dress and a blue velvet Victor Edelstein gown that she had worn when dancing with John Travolta at the White House – to raise money for HIV/AIDS charities.
The Christina Stambolian dress was purchased for £39,098 by a Scottish couple, Graeme and Briege Mackenzie, who at the time revealed that they would use it to raise further money for charities, as Diana wished.
Diana's former husband, sons, mother, siblings, a close friend, and a clergyman were present. Diana's body was clothed in a black long-sleeved, three-quarter length woolen cocktail dress designed by Catherine Walker which she had chosen some weeks before, a pair of black pantyhose, and a pair of black shoes.
Her wedding gown barely fit in the royal coach.
Paul's Cathedral, as the excessive amount of fabric made it difficult for her to fit in the coach. Folding the fabric over and over to fit Diana into the carriage was what caused the wrinkles on her dress, designer Elizabeth Emanuel told the Daily Mail.
Said Corrin, “I asked Peter about it and he said no, we can't, because her storyline doesn't impact the queen. Everything actually has to feed back to the queen. Even Diana's plotline, it's all about what she's doing and the effect that that's having on the queen. That's why it's called The Crown.
