In the finale of season two, John gives Beth a letter that says he accepts Rip as a son and that he's also gifting Rip a house on the ranch. Viewers are taken aback as they witness Rip cry and become emotional for the first and only time in the series.
John gives Beth a letter where he acknowledges there is nothing Rip wouldn't do for the Duttons. In addition, the letter also states that John is giving Rip a house on the ranch. As Rip realizes that he has earned the love and respect of John and that John sees him as a son, he begins to tear up.
Dutton asked him to confirm what he had heard, and afterward, he decided to give him a second chance. He was then adopted by John into his ranch. Rip soon became the ranch's foreman, leading the men in their work.
Rip finally got acknowledged by the man he has looked up to since he was a teenager – John Dutton. In a tear-jerking moment in the finale, Beth read her father's letter to Rip. In it, John revealed that he was leaving his eldest son, Lee's, house to his loyal right-hand man. How did Rip feel about the big moment?
John Dutton took in the orphan no questions asked in return for him taking the brand to swear his loyalty, and Rip has become his most loyal enforcer, the unrelenting foreman of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and unwavering protector of his darkest secrets.
He killed his father as a young boy and took that with him through adulthood, trying to fill that void of a father figure with John. It's why he's so dedicated to the Duttons and to the ranch, wanting that love and respect from his surrogate father, who ends up being his father-in-law at the end of season four.
John calls Rip "son" in the flashback scene at the beginning of the episode, and later Rip affectionately refers to Carter as "son" too.
In the finale, Beth read Rip a letter from John announcing that he's giving Rip his father's old house on the ranch as a way to say "thank you" for protecting his daughter — and fans clearly didn't see this heartfelt moment coming.
In the Duttons' case, they protect their way of life and ranch through the easement, and keep their property whole, as John intends. The family can continue to live there, and the land can be sold or passed on to heirs.
The third season episode titled 'Cowboys and Dreamers' shows how Beth was about fifteen years old when she became pregnant. Beth was hooking up with Rip at that time and it is implied that the baby was his. She wasn't very sure of how her father would react so she reaches out to her brother, Jamie, for help.
Rip Wheeler is an employee at Yellowstone. He is the "fixer" and sometimes the bruiser for the Dutton Family. He is also the husband of Bethany Dutton and John's son-in-law.
The underlying reason for John Dutton's dislike of Jamie is their differing personality and views on life. It is why they often fight, argue, and even work against each other in various stages of their life. Of course, it's also possible that John dislikes Jamie because he's adopted and not a true-blooded Dutton.
John's youngest son, Kayce, originally had a difficult relationship with his father after he left the family to marry Monica Long-Dutton, a teacher on the Broken Rock Reservation.
John Dutton is nothing if not a man of tradition. And tradition dictates that if Rip's to marry Beth, he has to ask her father for permission. John also knows that's something Rip won't ever do. His overwhelming respect for the Dutton patriarch prevents him.
Presumably the son of Jack and Elizabeth Dutton, this John Dutton is named after his father and grandfather and will one day inherit the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Who he marries is unknown, but together they have John Dutton IV, who then inherits the ranch into modern times.
Does Beth Cheat on Rip? No, Beth does not cheat on Rip. In season 4, we see Beth go to Walker for comfort after she and her father fight. Fans speculated there might be something between Beth and Walker, who has a rocky relationship with Rip.
Eventually, Beth ended up popping the big question to Rip, asking him to marry her. Beth even made it much more romantic by presenting Rip with a simple ring. After learning that John had given them his blessings, Rip accepted Beth's proposal.
But despite Beth's comment to Rip, they have both resisted becoming Carter's parental figures. In Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 3, "All I See Is You," Rip told Beth "He's not our son. No matter who he becomes, he never will be.
While she is scared that it may damage her relationship with Rip, Beth does tell him about her being sterile.
Those are two men who like I just said there's brotherly love and there's competition to an extent and they fight it out like two bulls, and they move on. That's it. That's just the way of life on a ranch, especially the Dutton ranch. There you have it!
She adopted a son (Carter) after finally marrying Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in season four. Rip and Beth have always had a rocky, toxic relationship. Now, tasked with the immense responsibilities of being parents for the first time, many audience members feel like they are failing, and badly.
Rip even tells Lloyd he loves him before going to town. You can tell it hurts both of them, that it had to be this way. But once it's done and over with, the two finally start to build their friendship back up again. This leads to the season finale, where Lloyd finally gets to be Rip's best man at the wedding.
Rip saw this as a sign of disloyalty to the ranch and began to form a dislike for Walker. Walker and Rip were not on the same page with each other when Walker agreed to work at Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Walker didn't know that being loyal to the ranch meant committing crimes to protect the Dutton family name.
