Spike has shown some empathy for Faye's situation too. Faye has also always taken care of Spike when he was injured, but she still kept a bitter attitude and viceversa. During the course of the anime, despite the nature of their relationship not changing, their bond grows undoubtedly tighter.

Mao Yenrai took Vicious and Spike under his wing inside the Syndicate where they rise up the ranks. Spike decided to leave the syndicate and attempted to take Julia with him. This betrayal seemingly triggered their blood feud and possibly resulted in Vicious' enlistment in the War on Titan.
Frightened by the affection she began to feel for her companions, Faye decided to run away from the Bebop to follow her philosophy of "leave before being abandoned." With some of the money, she fled to Callisto, the Moon of fugitives, and met a man named Gren who proceeded to "rescue" her from a gang.

It's the exact same reason why Spike hates Angel. Even years after Angel had already redeemed himself, Spike still sees Angel as Angelus whenever he looks at him.
Rather than sticking with his chosen family and moving on with his life—he reunites with Julia. And finds out his former partner, Vicious (Skip Stellrecht), is looking to cause some chaos. Ultimately, Julia dies in a shootout with the Syndicate, and that's when Spike throws his life out the window.
